Witt-Birn has 7 wrestlers qualify for sectionals

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood and Menominee Indian wrestling teams each had individual wrestlers qualify for sectionals after competing at the Division 3 Three Lakes/Phelps Regional on Jan. 30 in Three Lakes.

Witt-Birn earned 186 points to place second as a team, behind only Crandon (203). Menominee Indian accumulated 82 points to place fourth.

The first- and second-place finishers in each weight class qualified for sectionals. Witt-Birn had seven wrestlers qualify, while Menominee Indian had two.

Bonduel’s Troxel eclipses 1,000-point milestone

Bonduel senior Kara Troxel passed the 1,000-point milestone for her high school career during the team’s 71-28 Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division matchup against Menominee Indian on Jan. 19 in Bonduel.

“It’s just an amazing feeling,” said Troxel. “I never thought that I’d be able to get to this point. Just having the entire community here to support me is just awesome. I’m glad I could do it at home.”

Menominee Indian wrestling team hoping for improvement from returning talent

The Menominee Indian High School wrestling team returns a solid core of wrestlers this winter, which gives coach Kirk Bahr plenty of reason for optimism as the year starts up.

Menominee Indian finished ninth at the Central Wisconsin Conference Tournament last season, but has nearly every wrestler from that team back and are now hoping experience leads to more success.

Junior Asenex Turney was the team’s top performer at conference, placing third in the 285-pound weight class. He went on to qualify for sectionals.

Menominee Indian girls basketball team ready to roll behind standout senior

The Menominee Indian High School girls basketball team heads into the season with high hopes behind some strong returning talent.

The Eagles earned a 12-11 record last winter, going 3-9 in Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division play under coach Mike Skenadore. The team graduated two players from that squad, including one who made an all-conference team.

Senior guard Mimi Beaulieu-Morgan leads the team back onto the court after leading the conference with 19.6 points per game last year. She made the CWC-East first team for her efforts.

Bonduel girls cross-country team claims top finish

The Bonduel High School girls cross-country team won a Central Wisconsin Conference meet after posting the top score at the Charger Invitational on a cool and overcast Sept. 8 evening in Wittenberg.

Bonduel earned a team score of 24, comfortably ahead of second-place Rosholt (39).

The team was led by three top-10 finishes and had its fourth- and fifth-fastest runners place inside the top 15.

Kara Troxel was the team’s top finisher, placing second in 21 minutes, 19 seconds. Ashlyn Kurey wasn’t far behind, finishing fourth in 21:50.5.

Football, volleyball seasons postponed at Menominee Indian High School

Menominee Indian High School announced Monday morning that it was postponing its fall football and girls volleyball seasons. The school’s cross-country team will still participate in the fall season.

The announcement was made in a press release from Wendell Waukau, the superintendent of the Menominee Indian School District.

Local tribes emphasize masks to curb spread of COVID-19

The Stockbridge-Munsee and Menominee Indian tribes this past week issued statements in support of wearing masks to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

While the Stockbridge-Munsee Community has required the use of face masks by all employees and those visiting tribal businesses and government services, the Menominee Tribe last week went a step further by issuing a resolution requiring the use of face coverings across the reservation.

2 girls, 4 boys from Menominee Indian moving on to college sports

KESHENA — Six senior athletes from Menominee Indian High School plan to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level.

Basketball

Four of the six athletes will play basketball. Alyssa Corn and Raymond Fish will both stay in the state to play, while Norman Kakwitch and Senihseah Wayka are still undecided about which colleges they’ll be attending.

Corn expects to join the UW-Green Bay, Marinette Campus women’s team.

Three area schools have athletes make NIAST list

SHAWANO — A total of 13 area athletes were named to the Northern Indigenous All-State Team for 2019-20.

Six Shawano Community High School athletes made the list.

Keith Tourtillott (Menominee Tribe) and Ben Carroll (Menominee) made the wrestling list, while Demetrius Kaquatosh (Menominee) and Alec White (Menominee) earned spots on the boys’ cross-country team.

Katie Wilber (Menominee) landed on the volleyball list, while Odessa Arce (Stockbridge-Munsee) was on the girls’ track and field team.

Athlete Profile: Riley Uttecht

KESHENA — After weeks of speculation about the possibility of having a spring sports seasons, athletes around the state know for certain they won’t get to participate in a sport this spring. Menominee Indian senior Riley Uttecht is disappointed that he won’t get the chance to play for the Eagles this spring, even with baseball guaranteed in his future.
