Menominee salmon project awarded federal grant

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is awarding $177,190 to the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin for a study of salmon as a food source.

The funds will support the Menominee Tribal Wildlife Kokanee Salmon Project in Upper Bass Lake.

Tribe gets HRSA funds to combat opioids

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) recently announced over $1 million in awards to rural communities in Wisconsin to support key strategies to respond to the overdose risk from fentanyl and other opioids.

Among the recipients are the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin, which received $289,231. The funds will be earmarked for preventing and addressing neonatal exposure.

Menominee tribal offices closed for 2 weeks

Citing the continued rise in tribal and local community COVID-19 cases, the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin is temporarily closing its tribal government offices and facilities for a two-week period, starting Tuesday until Aug. 11.

According to data, the Menominee Reservation COVID-19 positive cases have nearly doubled within a week’s time. The reservation, which shares boundaries with Menominee County, has 17 positive cases with 8 being active cases as of Monday.

Tribe, state seek info on missing Menominee cases

The Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin and the state of Wisconsin came together Wednesday to plead for information related to some of the tribe’s missing person cases.

Police agencies in Keshena and Shawano have reported putting in a lot of a manhours searching for Katelyn Kelley, a 22-year-old Menominee woman who has been missing for over a month. Tribal and state officials told media and members of the community about the anguish that the family is going through, waiting and hoping for her safe return.
