Marion basketball teams split games with NEWCHAA

The Marion High School varsity basketball teams split a pair of games against Northeast Wisconsin Christian Homeschoolers Athletic Association on Jan. 31 in Marion.

The boys basketball team rallied late for a 51-45 win, while the Marion girls suffered a 46-19 loss.

The boys basketball matchup was a back-and-forth battle for most of the contest before NEWCHAA pulled ahead 41-34 with about seven minutes to play.

Marion’s comeback started with two free throws from Jaden Stuhr before Ryan Malueg knocked in a 3-pointer.

Ski Sharks enjoy huge year

The Shawano Ski Sharks enjoyed a memorable 2021 season.

The highlight of the year for the Ski Sharks was when the team hosted the Division 2 Show Ski National Championships on Aug. 6-7.

Not only was hosting the event a thrill for the team, but Shawano was able to put on a show for its home crowd and place second in the team competition.

5 Marion/Tigerton players receive all-conference football nods

A total of nine players from the Marion/Tigerton and Bowler/Gresham 8-player football teams were named to all-conference teams by the Central Wisconsin Conference.

Five players from the Marion/Tigerton were honored, while four from Bowler/Gresham got selected.

Marion/Tigerton had several players earn all-conference honors on both sides of the football, with junior Nick Malueg leading the way with a pair of first-team honors.

Malueg was honored for his play as a running back and linebacker.

Gresham’s Valarie Cerveny named conference Player of Year for volleyball

Four Gresham and two Marion volleyball players were named to all-conference teams in the Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division following strong fall seasons.

Gresham won the conference title and took home the Player and Coach of the Year honors.

Senior Valarie Cerveny was named the CWC-North Player of the Year, while Tim Wild was the Coach of the Year.

Cerveny averaged nearly four attack kills per set, racking up 260 for the full season. She also totaled 159 service points, 39 aces, 27 total blocks and 84 digs.

Bonduel girls cross-country team advances to state again

The Bonduel High School girls cross-country team is returning to state after a second-place finish at the Division 3 Athens Sectional on Oct. 23 in Athens.

The girls team was formed by Ashlyn Kurey, Kendra Troxel, Teagan Engel, Joselyn Bohm, Kaitlin Brooks, Taylor Rank and Anna Beaumier.

Bonduel’s Cooper Uelmen advanced to state after a fourth-place individual finish in the boys race.

Gillett’s Alex Peterson and Evan Peterson are also state bound after first- and third-place finishes, respectively.

Kurey leads Bonduel girls to 2nd place at conference meet

Bonduel High School's Ashlyn Kurey turned in a third-place individual finish to lead the girls team to second place at the Central Wisconsin Conference Meet on Oct. 12 in Stevens Point.

Kurey completed the course in 20 minutes, 59.3 seconds. The Bonduel girls finished behind only Amherst. Individual runners from Wittenberg-Birnamwood and Marion also competed in the girls race.

Pulaski’s Shaw wins Seymour Cross-Country Invite

Pulaski High School’s T.J. Shaw won the Seymour Cross-Country Invite with a time of 16 minutes, 44 seconds on Oct. 7 in Seymour.

Shaw’s first-place finish helped the Pulaski boys take eighth place with a total team score of 216. The Shawano boys claimed third with a score of 83.

On the girls side, the Pulaski girls had a score of 164 to place fifth. Shawano did not qualify for a team score with only four runners in action.
