Gresham/Bowler teams 2nd at track and field invitational

The Gresham/Bowler boys and girls track and field teams each scored 80 points to place second at the Weyauwega-Fremont Invitational on May 5 in Weyauwega.

Weyauwega-Fremont took first on both sides, with the girls team tallying 254 points and the boys team 251. The Tigerton girls came in third with 44 points, while Marion took seventh with six points.

Witt-Birn girls win home track and field invitational

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School girls track and field team accumulated 150 points to win the Wittenberg-Birnamwood Invitational on May 2 in Wittenberg.

The Witt-Birn boys placed fourth with 91 points, while Bonduel came in fifth with 68 points. The Gresham/Bowler boys took seventh with 40½ points.

The Bonduel girls came in third with 108 points, while Gresham/Bowler was sixth with 34 points.

Reese Rogowski led the Witt-Birn girls team with first-place finishes in the 100-meter dash (12.9 seconds), 200 (26.34), 400 (58.4) and long jump (17 feet, 4 inches).

Luepke helps Bonduel boys golf team win home invite

Led by a strong day from Reed Luepke, the Bonduel High School boys golf team turned in a first-place finish at the Bonduel Invite on April 29 at Golden Sands Golf Course in Cecil.

Luepke fired an 18-hole round of 79 to finish as the invite’s medalist.

“I hit really well off the tee and didn’t find myself in much trouble, also my short game saved me a lot of strokes, especially on the back nine,” said Luepke.

The Gresham/Bowler girls track and field team took third, while the boys team placed fourth at the Marion Mustang Invite on April 25 in Marion.

The Gresham/Bowler girls team scored 82 points, behind Manawa’s 192 points and Shiocton’s 84. Menominee Indian came in fourth with 66 points, while Tigerton was sixth with 14 points and Marion eighth with four points.

For the boys, Gresham/Bowler tallied 52 points, behind Iola-Scandinavia’s 156, Manawa’s 152 and Shiocton’s 64. Menominee Indian claimed fifth with 32 points.

The Gresham/Bowler track and field teams each turned in strong finishes at the Central Wisconsin Conference-Small Division Pre-Conference Meet on April 19 in Plainfield.

The boys co-op scored 79 points and tied Pittsville for second place, behind only Wild Rose's 124 points. The girls co-op scored 104 points and placed third.

Tigerton and Marion also scored points on the girls side. Tigerton placed seventh with 28 points, while Marion had 14 points and took ninth.

Gresham’s Vele, Bowler’s Kietlinski make 1st team in CWC-North

Gresham senior Belasaire Vele and Bowler junior Emmitt Kietlinski were among the eight area boys basketball players to make all-conference teams in the Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division this winter.

Vele stuffed the stat sheet all season for Gresham, putting up averages of 13.1 points, 9.5 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 2.4 steals per conference game.

“Being named first team in my conference is a great feeling,” said Vele. “Coming from just an honorable mention last year, I used it to fuel the fire and be a solid player for my senior year.”

Gresham’s Valarie Cerveny named Co-Player of Year

Gresham’s Valarie Cerveny was named the Co-Player of the Year in the Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division for a second straight girls basketball season.

The Gresham senior shared the honor this year with Manawa senior Mikenna Wegener. Gresham and Manawa shared the CWC-North title with 11-1 records this winter.

“It means a lot to me to be named Co-Player of the Year again in conference,” said Cerveny. “Honestly I don’t deserve this award any more than anyone else that landed on first team.

Bonduel girls win D4 regional title

The high school girls basketball postseason got underway last week with regional play.

Bonduel won two games to claim a Division 4 regional title, while Gresham and Menominee Indian also picked up playoff wins before being eliminated.

Third-seeded Bonduel opened the playoffs with a 46-44 overtime win over sixth-seeded Crandon in a regional semifinal battle on Feb. 25 in Bonduel. The Bears then routed seventh-seeded Shiocton 83-46 in the regional title game Feb. 26 in Bonduel.

Area girls basketball teams learn postseason seeds and first opponents

The area's 13 girls basketball teams learned their postseason fates when the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association released brackets on Feb. 13.

For the first time ever, seeding was conducted electronically. According to the WIAA seeding procedures, the following factors were used to determine the seeds:

• own winning percentage

• opponents’ winning percentage

• opponents’ opponent’s winning percentage

• defeated opponents’ winning percentage

• defeated opponents’ opponent’s winning percentage
