Marion golf team sets sights on individual goals with young roster

The Marion High School golf team has a couple experienced golfers on the roster this spring, but it is otherwise a pretty young and inexperienced group.

Senior Ellen Radies and junior Isaiah Gueths are the golfers back with the most varsity experience for coach Micah Schwantes. Radies was the team’s top finisher at regionals a couple springs ago.

“Having only two returning players from two years ago, it will be the inexperience of the team and teaching the new golfers the game of golf that will be the challenge,” said Schwantes.

Marion softball team has high hopes despite youth on roster

The Marion High School softball team will enter the spring season with a fairly young and inexperienced team, but the team also has reasons for optimism moving forward.

Coach Jenny Korth has one all-conference player back from the 2019 season in junior Ashley Fischer.

“We also finally have depth at the pitching position, which for us has been a struggle the last few years,” said Korth. “As the season progresses, I have high hopes we will continue to improve and be competitive.”

Marion baseball team confident under direction of new coach

The Marion High School baseball team comes into the spring season under the direction of a new head coach and ready to compete for a Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division title.

Joe Stuhr is the team’s new coach and he has a strong core of upperclassmen to build around this spring.

Gresham’s Pecore, Marion’s Scheef make CWC-North boys basketball 1st team unanimously

Gresham High School junior Lukas Pecore was named to the Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division first team unanimously after a big season on the basketball court.

Pecore averaged a conference-best 22.4 points per game across Gresham’s conference season.

No Clintonville/Marion wrestlers advance to state

The Clintonville/Marion co-op had three wrestlers compete in the Division 2 Seymour Sectional on Feb. 6, but none were able to place first or second to qualify for state.

Michael Michonski (170-pound weight class), Owen Hertel (195) and Caleb Moore (220) represented the co-op.

All three wrestlers finished 0-2 on the day, being pinned in each match.

2 Oconto Falls wrestlers qualify for state

Oconto Falls High School wrestlers' Graeson Pankratz and Clayton Whiting each qualified for state after competing in the Division 2 Seymour Sectional on Feb. 6.

To qualify for state, wrestlers had to place first or second in their weight class.

Pankratz and Whiting both came in first. Pankratz won the 113-pound weight class, while Whiting claimed the top spot in the 182 weight class.

Nine total Oconto Falls wrestlers racked up 79.5 points for a sixth-place finish as a team. Winneconne won the sectional with 107 team points.

Oconto Falls wrestling team wins regional title, sends 9 to sectionals

Nine Oconto Falls High School individual wrestlers qualified for sectionals while the team won the Division 2 Oconto Falls Regional on Jan. 30 in Oconto Falls.

The Panthers racked up 233.5 points, well ahead of second-place finishing Seymour (192).

To qualify for sectionals, individuals had to place either first or second in their weight class. Five Panther wrestlers claimed first, while four took second.

Marion/Tigerton’s Schweitzer honored for play on both sides of football field

The Marion/Tigerton and Gresham/Bowler football co-ops had players make the Central Wisconsin Conference 8-player all-conference team.

Marion/Tigerton senior Charles Schweitzer made the first team as an offensive and defensive lineman. Sophomore Nick Malueg (running back) also made the first team, while senior Carter Goke (offensive lineman) was on the second team.

Along with leading the offensive line, Schweitzer finished as the co-op’s top tackler on defense. He finished with 27 total tackles, five tackles for loss and a forced fumble.

3 Gresham volleyball players named to CWC-North first team

Despite the Gresham, Bowler and Tigerton girls volleyball teams all having their fall seasons cut short, all three teams had players honored by the Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division.

Marion was able to finish out its season and had two players honored.

Four total Gresham athletes earned all-conference honors, with three landing on the first team.

Senior Makayla Belongia and juniors Valarie Cerveny and Kalayla Tucker were first-team selections, while junior Hannah Cerveny made the second team. Valarie Cerveny was a unanimous selection to the first team.

Young Marion girls basketball team hoping to improve as season progresses

A young Marion High School girls basketball team is hoping to improve as players get used to the varsity level of play this winter.

Marion, which is coached by Brad Fischer, is coming off a 1-22 season last winter. The Mustangs went 0-10 in Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division play and graduated several players from that team, including its lone all-conference selection.

The team’s only returning starter is sophomore Kelsey Zillmer (post).
