Oconto Falls girls track and field team 1st at home invitational

The Oconto Falls High School girls track and field team turned in a first-place finish during the Oconto Falls Invitational on April 28 in Oconto Falls.

Oconto Falls earned 104½ points, with Marinette in second with 98 points. The Bonduel girls claimed fourth with 69½ points and the Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy co-op came in ninth with 28 points.

On the boys side, the top-finishing area team was Oconto Falls at fourth with 71 points. Lena/STAA took fifth with 49½ points, while Bonduel came in seventh with 43 points.

Several area track and field teams performed well despite cold and rainy conditions at the Gillett/Suring Invite on April 25 in Suring, with the Suring girls and Bonduel boys securing first-place finishes.

The Suring girls scored 152 points, comfortably ahead of Oconto Falls, which scored 105 points. Bonduel came in third with 100 points, while Gillett was sixth with 64½ points and Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy eighth with 33 points.

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood girls and Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy boys co-op each turned in second-place finishes at the Rosholt Back the Track Invitational on April 22 in Rosholt.

The Witt-Birn girls scored 108.5 points, behind only Loyal's 118.5. The Suring girls claimed third with 99 points, while Lena/STAA took sixth with 55 points.

On the boys side, Lena/STAA's 92.83 points trailed only Pacelli's 106.33. Suring took sixth with 70 points, while Witt-Birn was seventh with 63 points.

Gillett/Suring softball team rallies for wild win over STAA/Lena

The Gillett/Suring softball co-op rallied from an 11-run deficit and eventually earned a 16-15 walk-off win over St. Thomas Aquinas Academy/Lena in a Marinette & Oconto Conference battle on April 21 in Gillett.

STAA/Lena looked to be in complete control after a five-run first inning and six-run second, but Gillett/Suring scored four times in its half of the second to begin its comeback march.

4 area players named to WBCA All-Star Game rosters

Lena’s Max Beyer, Gresham’s Hannah Cerveny and Valarie Cerveny, and Bonduel’s Allaina Robaidek were all named to Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Game rosters.

Beyer was a part of the Division 5 boys red team, while Robaidek landed on the Division 4 North girls team. The Cerveny duo is a part of the Division 5 North girls roster.

The girls all-star games will be played June 29, while the boys games take place June 30. All games will be played at JustAgame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.

Suring girls track and field team claims 5th at Oshkosh indoor meet

The Suring High School girls track and field team turned in the top finish of four area teams competing at an indoor meet on March 29 in Oshkosh.

Suring placed fifth in the Division 3 field with 37 points. Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy tied for 11th with 21 points, while Gillett tied for 14th with 19 points. The Shawano girls were part of the Division 2 field, taking 22nd with six points.

Christine Sleeter won the D3 high jump after clearing 5 feet. She also came in fourth in the pole vault (7-0).

Lena’s Beyer, Shawano’s Metcalf-Grassman share area's Player of the Year honor for boys basketball

There was no shortage of talented boys basketball players in the area this winter season, with just about every area team having a guy or two who could go for 20-plus points in any game.

At the end of the year, it was Lena senior Max Beyer and Shawano junior Michael Metcalf-Grassman that separated themselves and earned the NEW Media Inc. Co-Player of the Year honor.

Area girls trio makes M&O basketball 1st team

Suring junior Christine Sleeter, Gillett junior Carleigh Kaczmarek and Lena junior Natalie McNurlen all made the Marinette & Oconto Conference first team for their play this girls basketball season.

Gillett senior Alaina Herzog earned a spot on the second team. Gillett senior Naomi Anker, Suring senior Kate Mahoney, junior MacKenzie Bailey and freshman Bunny Cramer and Lena freshman Eva Brooks were all honorable mentions. Anker was also tabbed the conference’s Top Defensive Player.

5 combined Lena, Suring/Gillett wrestlers honored by M&O Conference

Five wrestlers between the Lena and Suring/Gillett teams were named to Marinette & Oconto Conference teams after the winter season wrapped up.

Lena juniors Dylan Comins and Sam Marquardt and Suring/Gillett sophomore Trent Van Dan Elzen all made the first team. Lena junior Josh Kristof and Suring/Gillett sophomore Carter Whisman each were honorable mentions.
