11 individuals, 2 relay teams ready for state track and field meet

Eleven area individual athletes and two relay teams qualified for the 2022 Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Track and Field Championships, which will run June 3-4 in La Crosse.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood will send the most individual athletes to state of any area team. Reese Rogowski, Simon Schairer and Jalynn Horacek will represent the Chargers in an eye-popping eight events.

Rogowski will take part in three sprints and the long jump.

Five area boys golf teams and one individual golfer qualified for sectionals after strong outings at regionals on May 24.

Shawano and Pulaski took part in the Division 1 Notre Dame Regional at Thornberry Creek at Oneida. Menominee Indian/Gresham, Oconto Falls and Wittenberg-Birnamwood participated at the Division 2 Clintonville Regional at Riverside Golf Course in Clintonville, while Bonduel, Lena and Marion golfed at the Division 3 Iola-Scandinavia Regional at Glacier Wood Golf Course in Iola.

The Bonduel, Gillett, Gresham/Bowler, Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy and Suring track and field teams each competed at the Division 3 Rosholt Sectional on May 26.

To advance to state in Division 3, individuals or relay teams had to place in the top four or have one of the eight best performances of all the division’s sectionals. State-qualifying lists will be finalized over the weekend after all sectionals are completed.

All eight area high school boys golf teams competed at regionals on May 24, with several teams and one individual qualifying for sectionals.

The Bonduel, Gillett, Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy co-op and Suring track and field teams all competed at the Division 3 Suring Regional on May 23.

To advance to sectionals, individuals or relay teams had to place in the top four in their events.

Brenna Hertzfeldt: first in shot put (37 feet-3½ inches) and third in discus (98-5).

Suring girls, Lena/STAA boys win M&O team track and field titles

Area track and field teams had strong days at the Marinette & Oconto Conference Meet on May 17 in Suring.

The Suring girls team finished first with 180 points, while the Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy co-op secured first with 149 points.

The Gillett girls placed second with 118½ points, while Lena/STAA was fourth with 91 points. The Suring boys placed fourth with 97 points, and Gillett came in sixth with 91 points.

Oconto Falls teams win county track and field meet

The Oconto Falls High School boys and girls track and field teams each earned first-place finishes at the Oconto County Meet on May 9 in Oconto.

The Oconto Falls boys team accumulated 159 points, while the girls earned 122.

The Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy boys came in second with 67 points. Suring took third with 50 points and Gillett was fourth with 45 points.

On the girls side, Suring took second with 74½ points. Lena/STAA was third with 73 points, and Gillett took fifth with 34½ points.

Wildcats fall short in wild M&O baseball game

The Lena High School baseball team suffered a tough 13-12 loss to Marinette & Oconto Conference foe Wausaukee on May 6 in Lena.

The contest looked to be a pitcher’s duel through three innings before turning into a slugfest in the final three frames. The lead switched hands several times over the final couple innings, and Lena eventually came up a run short.

Oconto Falls girls win track and field invitational

The Oconto Falls High School girls track and field team placed first after scoring 109 points at the Peshtigo Invitational on May 5 in Peshtigo.

Marinette was a distant second with 82.5 points. Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy tied for fourth with 66 points, while Gillett was eighth with 59 points and Menominee Indian 10th with 24 points.

Luepke helps Bonduel boys golf team win home invite

Led by a strong day from Reed Luepke, the Bonduel High School boys golf team turned in a first-place finish at the Bonduel Invite on April 29 at Golden Sands Golf Course in Cecil.

Luepke fired an 18-hole round of 79 to finish as the invite’s medalist.

“I hit really well off the tee and didn’t find myself in much trouble, also my short game saved me a lot of strokes, especially on the back nine,” said Luepke.
