Whiting’s 4th title the top area sports story

The past year has produced plenty of memorable sports accomplishments.

There were impressive individual moments, like Oconto Falls’ Clayton Whiting winning his fourth state title, which was unanimously voted the top sports story of 2022. Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Reese Rogowski and Pulaski’s Taya Schmidt, along with several area wrestlers, also had strong state showings to earn spots among the top-10 stories.

Area wrestlers shine at Shawano Holiday Classic

Five area wrestling teams had varsity competitors in action at the Shawano Holiday Classic on Dec. 17 in Shawano, with a number of wrestlers turning in strong finishes.

Bonduel’s Hailey Berg and Maddy Sokolski and Suring/Gillett’s Parker Zahn all placed first in girls competition to earn the top finishes among area teams.

Berg and Sokolski were both dominant on their ways to top finishes. Each one of their eight combined matches ended in a pin.

Suring boys basketball team downs Lena in low-scoring affair

The Suring High School boys basketball team snapped a two-game losing skid and picked up its second Marinette & Oconto Conference win after taking down Lena 49-33 on Dec. 12 in Suring.

Suring jumped out to a 13-0 lead and then withstood a second-half charge by Lena before pulling away late.

During the 13-0 start to the contest, Suring racked up several offensive rebounds, leading to a bunch of second-chance points. Defensively, the Eagles’ zone defense flustered the Wildcats into several turnovers.

Lena takes down Suring in M&O girls basketball battle

The Lena High School girls basketball team used a balanced attack to take down Suring 54-45 in a Marinette & Oconto Conference matchup on Dec. 5 in Suring.

The Wildcats had three players score in double figures and eventually were able to pull away from the hosting Eagles.

“I guess pushing the ball and going to Eva (Brooks) inside,” said Lena coach Tim Goldschmidt on what his team did to come away with the win. “We had a height advantage on the inside, and we got a lot of fastbreak points, which was the big key.”

Lena girls best Bowler to open basketball season

The Lena High School girls basketball team opened its season on a positive note, taking down Bowler 60-21 on Nov. 22 in Bowler.

Senior Natalie McNurlen led the visiting Wildcats with 15 points, highlighted by a 3-point make. Sophomore Eva Brooks, senior Claire Brooks and senior Chaela Rabas were in double figures as well, scoring 12, 11 and 11, respectively.

While shots were falling for Lena, that wasn’t the case for Bowler, as sophomore Paige Treptow was the leading scorer for the Panthers with six points.

2021-22 conference/overall results: 10-6 in M&O; 14-11 overall.

2021-22 tournament results: Lost to Florence in regional semifinal.

Returning starters/varsity players (positions): Seniors: Reed Hosking (guard), Bryce Kittredge (guard), Sidney Sylvester (forward). Juniors: Logan Graef (forward), Anthony Seefeldt (center). Sophomores: Tyler Shallow (guard).

Gauderman, Marquardt, Kristof earn all-state football honors

Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s David Gauderman and Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy co-op’s Sam Marquardt and Josh Kristof were named to Wisconsin Football Coach Association’s All-State Teams on Nov. 14.

Gauderman made the Small School All-State Team as an offensive back. Marquardt made the 8-player All-State Team as a running back, while Kristof was an honorable mention as an inside linebacker.

Gauderman was a workhorse for the Chargers, rushing for 1,539 yards and 16 touchdowns on 149 attempts. He also caught 12 passes for 157 yards and three scores.

Senior Marquardt tabbed top player in 8-player football

The area football talent didn’t stop at the 11-player level, as there were several strong 8-player teams and individuals that took the field this fall.

Lena High School senior Sam Marquardt starred for the Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy co-op and was rewarded by being named the NEW Media Inc. Player of the Year at the 8-player level.

Lena’s McNurlen, Suring’s Sleeter make M&O volleyball 1st team

Several players from the Suring, Lena and Gillett volleyball teams earned spots on Marinette & Oconto Conference teams after the fall season wrapped up.

Suring had four players honored after tying for second place in the conference standings with a 13-3 record. Lena finished tied for fifth with a 7-9 mark and had two players honored, while Gillett also had two players recognized after going 4-12 in M&O play.

Suring senior Christine Sleeter and Lena senior Natalie McNurlen each landed on the all-conference first team.

Lena’s Marquardt, Kristof named conference’s top football players

Several football players from Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy, Gillett and Suring earned spots on Peninsula Conference teams after the fall season wrapped up.

Lena/STAA finished second in the conference but had the top player on either side of the ball.

Senior Sam Marquardt was the Offensive Player of the Year, while senior Josh Kristof was the Defensive Player of the Year. Marquardt made the first team as a running back and second team as a defensive back, while Kristof made the first team as a linebacker.
