Football: Stuart named offensive, defensive player of year in MONLPC-8

SURING — The Suring High School football team came into the season hoping to make a smooth transition to 8-man football. The Eagles did just that, tying for the MONLPC-8 title and earning a postseason berth behind a monster year from senior Logan Stuart.

Stuart was named the offensive and defensive player of the year in the conference. He won the offensive award as a running back and the defensive honor as a linebacker.

Monument dedication highlights Oconto County Veterans Day events

A dedication ceremony for the long-planned Oconto Falls Veterans Monument kicks off the area’s observation of Veterans Day 2019.

Several local speakers are expected Saturday to address those attending the ceremony for the monument, which was recently completed just south of the Oconto Falls School District office at 200 N. Farm Road.

The School Board granted permission this summer to install the monument on district property, after veterans who revived the project expressed concerns about its original proposed location on Central Avenue near the war memorial.

Cross-Country: Gillett boys, girls qualify for state

WESTFIELD — The Gillett High School boys and girls cross-country teams each qualified for the state meet after first-place finishes at the Division 3 Westfield Sectional on Saturday.

The boys team posted a score of 37, while the girls tallied a 36. Bonduel finished second in both races, with the boys team finishing with a score of 72 and the girls an 80.

Lena Lions Club receives state education award

LENA — The Lena Lions Club is actively involved in supporting local schools, from its “Student of the Month” recognition to college scholarships to donations to the eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C.

The depth of that support has been noticed as far away as Madison.

The club is one of five organizations from around Wisconsin recognized Thursday by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Carolyn Stanford Taylor as 2019 Friends of Education for their work on behalf of Wisconsin students.

Cross-Country: Oconto Falls teams finish fifth at invitational

SHIOCTON — Behind strong finishes from Autumn Canavera and Joe Adams, the Oconto Falls High School cross-country teams each finished fifth in the Bonduel Invitational at the Navarino Nature Center on Tuesday.

Canavera, a senior, finished second in the girls race with a time of 21 minutes, 47.21 seconds. The Oconto Falls girls finished with a team score of 104.

“I think it was the girl in front of me that pushed me (to a strong finish),” said Canavera. “She had a really good pace going so I just tried to follow her.”

The Lena Lions Dairy Fest kicked off Sept. 7 with a 5K run/walk followed by an hourlong parade featuring the Lena High School band, the Pulaski band and several veterans groups.

The Lena Lions selected Dick and Dolly Gilles as parade marshals for the Lena Dairy Fest, scheduled for Saturday.

The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. on the west end of the village and end at St. Anne Parish, where many events will take place on the parish grounds.

LENA — Logan Stuart rushed for three touchdowns and the Suring High School football team overcame a heap of penalties to earn an 18-6 MONLPC-8 road victory over the Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy co-op on Thursday.

The first half saw both teams possessing the ball for long stretches, trying to wear the opposition down. It was a gutsy call by Suring coach Mitch Taylor that changed the complexion of the game.

Up 6-0 and facing a fourth-and-1 from its own 10-yard line late in the first half, Taylor decided to roll the dice and put the ball into the hands of Stuart.

Logan Stuart rushed for three touchdowns to help Suring overcome a penalty-filled game and move to 2-0 by taking down Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy in Lena on Thursday.

The turning point in the game was a 90-yard rushing score for Stuart on a fourth-and-1 play late in the first half.

Lena/STAA scored on the final play of the contest to avoid the shutout. The co-op dropped to 0-2.

Young Oconto Falls cross-country teams ready to run

OCONTO FALLS — Area cross-country teams opened practice on Aug. 19 in preparation for the fall season.

Oconto Falls heads into the season looking to replace several seniors, while Gillett, Suring and the Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy co-op return most of their runners from last year.
