Boys Basketball: Gillett powers past Lena in M&O clash

GILLETT — The senior-led Gillett High School boys basketball team proved to be too much to handle for an inexperienced Lena squad, with the hosting Tigers earning a 76-38 Marinette & Oconto Conference victory on Friday.

Gillett used a balanced offensive attack and aggressive on-ball defensive approach to get the job done.

Four Tigers scored in double figures, led by senior Logan Block’s 28 points. Freshman Derek Block hit four 3-pointers while tallying 18 points, while seniors Anthony Carroll and Elijah Framnes provided 13 points each.

Girls Basketball: Suring scratches out win over Lena

SURING — Kylee Stelzer spent much of the second half on the bench in foul trouble, but when she got back on the court, she played a clutch role in helping the Suring girls claim a 45-41 Marinette and Oconto Conference victory over Lena on Friday.

Stelzer, a junior, picked up her fourth foul at the 11:47 mark of the second half and the hosts up 25-22. When she checked back in at the 4:51 mark, the Eagles were on the wrong side of a 33-32 score.

Daniel J. Dumas, 73, Oconto Falls, died peacefully Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2019, at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay surrounded by family, following complications from being exposed to Agent Orange during his military service. He was born Sept. 4, 1946, on the family farm in rural Lena to Daniel and Phyllis (Smith) Dumas. Dan grew up in rural Lena and attended Lena High School.

Wrestling: Misco leads Lena at classic

SHAWANO — Luke Misco secured a fifth-place finish to lead the Lena High School wrestling team at Saturday’s Shawano Holiday Classic.

Misco earned the finish after losing just once in the 106-pound weight class. After earning a bye to start the day, Misco lost a 9-2 decision before picking up a pin to advance to the fifth-place match.

Misco — one of six varsity Lena wrestlers in action — pinned Shiocton’s Gage Oskey in 2:41 to take the match.

Lena’s Ayden Decoursin took sixth place in the 120 weight class after going 2-3 on the day.

Wrestling: Experienced core hopes to lead Oconto Falls to big season

OCONTO FALLS — Despite competing in the loaded North Eastern Conference, the Oconto Falls High School wrestling team believes it can put together a big season.

Oconto Falls, which will be coached by Dave Brasier, has several wrestlers back from last year’s team that went 9-6 in duals for the season and 5-3 in NEC duals.

Two of the returning wrestlers — senior Tyler Budz and sophomore Clayton Whiting — ended last season competing at state, with Whiting winning a Division 2 title as a freshman in the 152-pound weight class.

Identical twins mark their 100th birthday

On Thursday, Dec. 11,1919, Francis and Ann Gilles welcomed twin boys into the world. This week the boys turn 100.

Identical twins Merne and Mark Gilles were raised on a dairy and crop farm outside Lena and spent their youth milking cows, working in the fields and finding a little time for high school sports.

Lee H. Crozier, 86, an Oconto Falls resident, entered into eternal life Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2019, at his residence. Lee was born Nov. 7, 1933, in Oconto to the late Carl and Greata Zimmer Crozier. He was a graduate of the Lena High School.

Volleyball: Gillett’s Wickman makes M&O first team

GILLETT — Every high school athlete hopes that their senior season is their best year of competition. Gillett’s Grace Wickman was able to achieve that feat while competing for the Gillett High School volleyball team this fall.

Wickman was named to the Marinette & Oconto Conference first team all-conference following a strong senior season on the court.

During conference play, Wickman accumulated 73 attack kills, 25 blocks, 24 digs and 20 aces.

GILLETT — The Gillett High School girls basketball team has high aspirations heading into the 2019-20 season.

Gillett is coming off a sectional semifinal appearance and returns every player from that team. The Tigers finished 16-10 overall and 10-6 in the Marinette & Oconto Conference.

Boys Basketball: Oconto Falls has different mindset under new coach

OCONTO FALLS — The Oconto Falls High School boys basketball team enters the season under a new head coach and with a new attitude.

Gary Regal, the long-time head coach at Suring, takes over the same position for the Panthers.

“Expectations are to work hard every day and setting a new mental mindset,” said Regal. “I expect us to defend and take care of the ball from day one.”

Oconto Falls lost a couple solid seniors from last year’s team that went 5-19 overall and 2-16 in the North Eastern Conference, but also returns several talented upperclassmen.
