Man accused of pointing gun at women, child

OCONTO — Bond was set at $25,000 cash for a Crivitz area man charged with pointing a gun at two women and a toddler during an argument Feb. 16 in Lena.

Steven M. Schmitz, 66, was charged Feb. 17 in Oconto County Circuit Court with three counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety in connection with the incident, which occurred as one of the women helped the other move out of a residence in Lena.

Boys Basketball: Suring awarded No. 5 seed for postseason

SURING — The Suring High School boys basketball team was given a No. 5 seed for the 2020 boys basketball tournament.

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association released the playoff brackets Sunday evening.

Suring is the fifth seed in a Division 5 regional pod that includes Wausaukee (No. 1) and Wabeno/Laona (No. 2).

The Eagles will host 12th-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas Academy on Tuesday, March 3 at 7 p.m.

Gillett and Lena are also in that regional pod.

Wrestling: Lena's Misco qualifies for state

SHAWANO — Luke Misco will represent the Lena High School wrestling team at the state tournament after placing second at the Division 3 Bonduel sectional, which was hosted by Shawano Community High School on Saturday.

Misco, a freshman, won two of his three matches for a second-place finish in the 106-pound weight class.

Misco opened the day with a high-scoring 13-10 decision win before a 21-8 major decision win in his semifinal match.

Girls Basketball: Gillett earns No. 2 seed for postseason

GILLETT — After an impressive regular season, the Gillett High School girls basketball team was rewarded for its strong play with a No. 2 seed in the Division 5 tournament.

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association released girls basketball brackets on Sunday.

Gillett also received a bye with its No. 2 seed and will host either seventh-seeded Gibraltar or 10th-seeded Suring in a regional semifinal on Feb. 28.

Suring’s regional quarterfinal game against Gibraltar will be played in Gibraltar on Feb. 25.

Mary ‘Lois’ Smet

Mary L. “Lois” Smet, 83, Coleman, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2020, at her home. She was born March 29, 1936, in Wisconsin to William and Mary Lou (Carriveau) De Grave. After graduating from Oconto High School, Class of 1954, she was united in marriage to Kennith Norbert Smet on Dec 1, 1956, in Stiles where they lived and farmed for eight years before moving to Lena where they raised their children. Ken preceded her in death in 1993. Lois was employed at many businesses through the years including Mirro Co. in Two Rivers, Chicken Shack in Stiles and Snack Shack in Oconto.

Six Lena wrestlers advance past regional

LENA — Six members of the Lena High School wrestling team placed in the top two spots in their respective weight classes at the Division 3 Lena Regional on Saturday to qualify to sectionals.

Lena scored 168 points as a team to place fourth in the seven-team regional.

Gillett/Suring also competed in the regional, scoring 41 points to place seventh. No Gillett/Suring wrestlers placed in the top two to lock up a spot at sectionals.

Luke Misco led Lena with a first-place finish in the 106-pound weight class.

Two killed, one injured in two-vehicle crash

Two people were killed and another seriously injured Thursday in a wrong-way crash on U.S. 141 in Lena.

The Oconto County Sheriff’s Department said the accident happened when a sport-utility vehicle driven by Sande Walker, 59, of Oconto Falls, was traveling north in the southbound lanes when it collided with a southbound truck about a quarter-mile north of County Road A near the on ramp.

Emergency dispatch logs indicate the call came in at 5:36 p.m.

Walker and the truck driver, Marvin Lueneburg, 73, of De Pere died at the scene, the department said.

Kenneth “Dewey” Shallow

Kenneth “Dewey” Shallow, 79, Lena, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday Jan. 15, 2020, at a local hospital. He was born Nov. 1, 1940, in the Town of Oconto to Oliver Sr. and Gladys (Brabant) Shallow. On Dec 15, 1973, Dewey was united in marriage to Mary Lynn Thomson at St Charles Catholic Church in Lena. Dewey began farming on the family farm at a young age and after high school remained there with his brother Russ until retiring in 1999. In his retirement, Dewey began working for Ourown construction for another seven years.

Keith J. Evrard

Keith Joseph Evrard, 87, of Lena, passed away on Jan. 14, 2020 surrounded by his family. He was born to the late Orville and Clara (DeJardin) Evrard on Jan. 18, 1932. He proudly served in the Army in the Korean War. Keith married Marjorie Aubut on July 7, 1956, at St. Peters in Oconto. The couple farmed together for 37 years. They enjoyed camping in Arizona for 19 years. He enjoyed going to the casino, playing cards, fishing and he enjoyed watching the Green Bay Packers. He was a member of Lena American Legion Post 342 and a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Stiles.

Alex Herbert Beyer

Alex “Herbie” Herbert Beyer, 78, of New London, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2019, at his residence. He was born Nov. 28, 1941, to the late Edmund Sr. and Agnes (Vernosh) Beyer. Alex was baptized and had his First Communion at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spruce. He attended school at Spruce Grade School and graduated from Lena High School. Alex was united in marriage to Judy Arndt on Feb. 14, 1984, in Appleton. She preceded him in death in 2012. He formerly worked at area dairy farms and also for Stokely VanCamp Canning Factory in Appleton.
