LENA — After making it to sectionals as part of relay teams in her first three years of high school, Lena’s Mikayla Mahas was hoping to help a relay team take the next step and qualify for state in her senior season. Instead, the Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy co-op — like the the rest of the state — won’t ever step on the track after the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the season.

LENA — For Lena High School senior Lillian Sellen, the spring softball season was a special time. She not only got to play the sport she loves, but also get to make new friends because of Lena’s co-op with St. Thomas Aquinas Academy.

Sellen was coming off a junior season in which she landed on the Marinette & Oconto Conference honorable mention team and was hoping to put together an even bigger senior season.

Oconto County Breakfast on the Farm 2020 canceled

LENA — The ongoing restrictions on public activity ordered in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic led the Oconto County Breakfast on the Farm Committee to cancel this year’s event.

“It is with deep regret the Oconto County Breakfast on the Farm Committee along with the Alsteen Family has decided to cancel the 2020 Oconto County Breakfast on the Farm event due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19,” the committee posted on social media. “We would like to thank you for your continued support of the Oconto County Breakfast on the Farm.”

LENA — Not having a final high school season is a thought seniors hate having. Lena’s Alexis Misco is definitely among those seniors, especially after the first three years of her high school track career were hampered by an injury.

Having moved past the injury, Misco — a member of the Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy co-op — was hoping to make her senior season a memorable one.

LENA — The Lena High School wrestling team entered the 2019-20 season with loftier goals than in years past with a bigger roster of wrestlers and was able to put together a strong season after putting in some hard work.

The team was led by several underclassmen, with a trio of wrestlers earning Marinette & Oconto Conference honors.

Freshman Luke Misco and sophomore Cody Dellise each made the all-conference first team. Freshman Sam Marquardt was tabbed an honorable mention.

Boys Basketball: Gillett’s Block, Lena’s Beyer make M&O second team

GILLETT — Gillett’s Logan Block ended his high school basketball career on a strong note, making the Marinette & Oconto Conference second team.

Block helped the Tigers win 10 games for the season. The team went 5-11 in M&O play for a sixth-place finish in the nine-team conference.

The senior big man averaged 14.5 points per conference game to pace Gillett. Block also averaged about 5 rebounds a game.

Red Cross calls for donors during emergency

The American Red Cross strongly urges healthy people who are feeling well to give blood or platelets to help maintain a sufficient blood supply and prevent shortages as concerns about the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019, or COVID-19, rise in the U.S.

Cold and flu season has already impacted the nation’s ability to maintain its blood supply. As the number of coronavirus cases grows in the U.S., the number of people eligible to give blood for patients in need could decrease further, the Red Cross said in a news release.

Girls Basketball: Gillett’s DeBauch, Schaal make M&O first team

GILLETT — The Gillett High School girls basketball team was in the hunt for a Marinette & Oconto Conference title this winter, due in large part to the play of juniors Aubrey DeBauch and Karissa Schaal.

The two players were recognized by the conference for their efforts on the court, making the all-conference first team.

Wrestling: Falls’ Konitzer takes fifth, makes state podium

MADISON — Along with Clayton Whiting’s state title, the Oconto Falls High School wrestling team had three other wrestlers compete at the 77th annual WIAA Individual Wrestling Championship Tournament from Thursday through Saturday at the Kohl Center.

Oconto Falls senior Brendan Konitzer capped his high school career with a fifth-place finish in the Division 2 113-pound weight class.

Panther junior Aidan Stary (160) and sophomore Graeson Pankratz (106) also wrestled at state and were eliminated after opening-match losses.

MADISON — Five area high school wrestlers hit the mat for the 77th annual WIAA Individual Wrestling Championship Tournament at the Kohl Center on Thursday.

Oconto Falls' Brendan Konitzer and Clayton Whiting won their matches to advance to the second day of the tournament.

Konitzer, a senior, won a 3-1 decision in overtime to advance, while Whiting, a sophomore, won with a second-period pin.
