Lena’s Comins qualifies for state tournament

Lena High School sophomore wrestler Dylan Comins qualified for the state tournament after placing second in the 106-pound weight class at the Division 3 Valders Sectional on Feb. 6.

Comins posted a 3-1 record on the day to punch his ticket to state.

“It means a lot,” said Comins of qualifying for state. “My dad (Rory) was a state qualifier as a sophomore and I wanted to do the same and I did it. I worked for it since I was 4 and it’s been a dream since, and I achieved that goal.”

Wrestlers from Witt-Birn, Bonduel, Lena qualify for state

Individual wrestlers from Bonduel, Lena and Wittenberg-Birnamwood all qualified for state after competing in the Division 3 Valders Sectional on Feb. 6.

To qualify for state, wrestlers had to place either first or second in their respective weight class.

Witt-Birn's David Gauderman (220-pound weight class) posted a perfect record on the day to take first and punch his ticket to state.

Bonduel's Tyson Bogacz (145) and Max Sokolski (152) each placed second to qualify for state. Lena's Dylan Comins (106) also placed second to earn a spot at state.

The Bonduel and Lena wrestling teams each had four individual wrestlers qualify for sectionals after competing in the Division 3 Lena Regional on Jan. 30 in Lena.

Bonduel came in third as a team with 135 points, while Lena placed fourth with 134.5 points. Coleman won the regional title with 304.5 points.

To advance to sectionals, wrestlers had to place either first or second in their weight class.

Beyer guides Lena boys basketball team past Gillett

After trailing for most of the game, the Lena High School boys basketball team hit several key shots down the stretch to rally past Gillett for a 49-45 victory in a Marinette & Oconto Conference clash on Jan. 8 in Lena.

Trailing 40-36, Lena’s Logan Shallow hit a 3-pointer to bring the hosts within a point with just over four minutes to play. From there, Max Beyer took over, scoring the final eight points for Lena.

Beyer hit a jumper to put Lena up 41-40 — the team’s last lead had been with 8:15 remaining in the first half.

Eileen V. Duffeck

Eileen V. Duffeck, 82, formerly of Lena, passed away on Jan. 2, 2021, at Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Oconto Falls. She was born to the late Donald and Leone FitzGerald on March 8, 1938. She graduated from Peshtigo High School. After school Eileen married Clifford Duffeck on Aug. 17, 1957. She worked at McMahon’s Grocery Store in Gillet for many years. Eileen became manager at the Oconto Airport until her retirement. She loved gardening, feeding the birds, golfing, fishing and her cats.

Athlete Profile: Chloie Potter

The Lena High School girls basketball team came into the season off back-to-back one-win seasons. Because of the dedication and leadership shown by players like senior Chloie Potter, the Wildcats already have three wins this season.

Potter recorded five points, three steals, two assists, two rebounds and a block in the team’s first win of the season against Wausaukee on Dec. 1.

In the team’s second win against St. Thomas Aquinas Academy on Dec. 14, Potter had seven points, four steals, five rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Lena man charged with long-term child abuse

An Oconto County judge has set bond at $1 million cash for a Lena man charged with 23 felony counts, including child sexual assault and other abuses of children between 2005 and 2016.

Victor J. Alberts, 54, is charged with three counts of repeated sexual assault of the same child, nine counts of child abuse, five counts of causing mental harm to a child and two counts of first-degree sexual assault of a child, among other related allegations.

5 Lena/STAA football players make all-conference list

After putting together a 5-3 season, the Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy high school football co-op had five players named to a MONLPC-8 team.

Senior Ethan Russell (defensive back), juniors Logan Shallow (running back) and Lane Whiting (linebacker) and sophomores Sam Marquardt (quarterback) and Josh Kristof (linebacker) were the five co-op players recognized.

Robert “Bob” James Zaidel, 76, Lena, died Friday morning, Dec. 4, 2020, at home surrounded by family following a 14-month courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born Jan. 17, 1944, in the Town of Spruce to Joseph and Ruby (Cisler) Zaidel Sr. Bob grew up in the area and attended school, graduating from Lena High School with the Class of 1962. While in high school, he began working for Frigo Cheese.

Gillett, Suring, Lena players make M&O all-conference volleyball list

The Gillett, Suring and Lena girls volleyball teams all had players recognized by the Marinette & Oconto Conference during the fall season.

Seniors Aubrey DeBauch, Karissa Schaal and Emily Umentum and junior Naomi Anker made the all-conference list for Gillett.

Seniors Kelsey Smith and Cher Whiting and sophomore Trinity Remic represented Suring on the list, while senior Morgan Cruz was Lena’s lone all-conference selection.
