Lena/STAA boys, Suring girls track and field teams take 1st at Suring Invite

The Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy boys and Suring girls track and field teams placed first at the Suring Invite April 27 in Suring.

The Lena/STAA boys earned 108 points, edging Bonduel (106). The Suring girls scored 133.5 points, just ahead of Bonduel (129) and Gillett (121).

Athlete Profile: Kennedy Marquardt

Lena High School’s Kennedy Marquardt is hoping to put together a memorable senior track and field season before heading to St. Norbert College to compete in the sport.

Before having her junior season erased by the coronavirus pandemic, Marquardt was racking up the top finishes in her first two high school seasons.

As a sophomore, Marquardt was the Marinette & Oconto Conference champion in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes, along with the long jump. She later qualified for sectionals as an individual in all four events.

Lena boys golf team eyeing more success with experience on its side

While many spring sports teams in the state enter the season with a multitude of new athletes at the varsity level, the Lena High School boys golf team has a couple of familiar faces back.

The last time the Wildcats competed in 2019, they qualified for sectionals under coach John Moe.

“We are still young with losing a year to COVID, but I expect to be competitive in our conference (Marinette & Oconto),” said Moe.

Lena has two golfers back from the sectional-qualifying team. Those golfers are juniors Mason Simonson and Blaydn Anderson.

After a year off, Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy co-op track and field coach Fritz Weidner isn’t 100% sure what to expect going into the spring season. What the coach does know for certain is that he has a roster full of talented athletes.

Leading the way on the girls side is senior Kennedy Marquardt, who has signed a letter of intent to St. Norbert College, where she’ll be continuing her track career. The last time the team competed in 2019, Marquardt qualified for sectionals in four events, the long jump, 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes.

4 Lena wrestlers make M&O all-conference list

The Lena and Gillett/Suring wrestling teams each had multiple athletes recognized by the Marinette & Oconto Conference.

The conference did not break the all-conference wrestlers down between a first, second and honorable mention team, instead releasing one list.

Senior Kevin Chang and the sophomore trio of Dylan Comins, Sam Marquardt and Luke Misco were named to the all-conference list for Lena.

Gillett places 3 on all-conference boys basketball list

Three Gillett, two Lena and one Suring boys basketball player were named to the Marinette & Oconto all-conference list.

The conference did not break the all-conference players down between a first, second and honorable mention team, instead releasing one list.

Max Beyer and Logan Shallow were each named to the all-conference list after leading Lena on the court as juniors.

Beyer averaged 22.6 points per game for the season to lead the conference. In the team’s last eight games, he averaged 27.8 points per contest.

The Gillett and Suring girls basketball teams each had four players named to the Marinette & Oconto Conference list, while Lena had three.

Suring

Paige Krueger, Kate Mahoney, Kelsey Smith and Kylee Stelzer represented Suring on the all-conference list.

In Suring’s 13 conference games, when the team went 11-2, it was Stelzer that led the team in scoring at 14.1 points per game.

Lena’s Beyer makes WBCA all-state boys basketball team

Lena High School’s Max Beyer was named to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association all-state honorable mention team in Division 5 after a big junior season.

“It means a lot,” said Beyer of the honor. “I want to get better and will do all I can to be the best player that I can be, working hard every day to get to that next level.”

In 20 regular-season contests, Beyer averaged 22.6 points per game.

The junior shot 48.5% from the floor, 79.6% from the free-throw line and 47.1% from 3-point land. He made 48 3-pointers and 78 free throws across the 20 games.

Oconto Falls’ Whiting wins 3rd state wrestling title

Oconto Falls High School junior Clayton Whiting captured his third state wrestling title after winning the 182-pound weight class at the Division 2 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament on Feb. 13 at Adams-Friendship High School.

“Today’s title just shows that I’m getting better and that there is more room for improvement and I gotta set even high goals for myself now,” said Whiting.

The junior wrestler looked dominant on his way to first place, pinning all three of his opponents on the day.

Oconto Falls’ Whiting wins third state wrestling title

Oconto Falls High School junior Clayton Whiting posted a 3-0 record at the Division 2 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament on Feb. 13 at Adams-Friendship High School for his third state title.

Whiting earned each of the wins by pin to claim first in the 182-pound weight class.

Teammate Graeson Pankratz placed sixth in the 113 weight class after going 1-3 on the day.

At the Division 3 state tournament at Wausau East High School, Bonduel's Max Sokolski and Wittenberg-Birnamwood's David Gauderman each placed fourth in their respective weight classes.
