Off-road racers thunder into Lena

The power of Lena’s Dirt City Motorplex off-road racing complex was on full display on Main Street on July 26, the night before the AMSoil Off-Road National races.

Thousands of people swarmed the main drag from Rosera Street to West Railroad Street for the Thunder On Main event, checking out the line of racing vehicles that would be competing for prizes at Dirt City over the next two days.

Basketball coaches pick Brooks for all-state team

Lena’s Eva Brooks has been named to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division 5 All-State Team.

Brooks led Lena (28-3) to a state runner-up finish in the program’s first state tournament appearance since 1991. The 6-1 forward averaged 19.8 points, 12.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.7 steals, and 3.3 blocks per game for coach Tim Goldschmidt and the Wildcats. Brooks will enter her senior year with 1,153 career points. Lena has a 63-20 record over her first three seasons.

A ride to remember

For the community of Lena, the three-day adventure began and ended with a stalwart group of teenage girls riding atop fire trucks to the high school gymnasium.

In between were exhilarating highs and heartbreaking disappointments as a community rode a roller coaster of emotions with the young ladies.

Lena advances to state title game

The Lena Wildcats, in the school’s fourth trip to the state girls basketball tournament, are one win away from their second state title.

After a workman-like 53-48 victory over Clear Lake on March 8, the Wildcats (28-2) are scheduled to play Albany/Monticello in the WIAA Division 5 state championship game at 11:05 a.m. March 9 at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon.

Lena girls basketball team advances to state tournament

Lena’s girls basketball team advanced to the state tournament with a 66-57 win over Pittsville in Antigo on March 2.

Madilyn Thomson scored 23 points, and Eva Brooks dropped in another 20 to lead the Wildcats. Also scoring were Kali Fischer with 11, Whitney Potter with six, and Hannah Thomson and Maddy Kushner, each with three.

Brooks had a stunning 20 rebounds, with Hannah Thomson and Madilyn Thomson each pulling down eight. Madilyn Thomson led her teammates with five assists and four steals.

Lena workshop looks at farm production costs

Farms have a pair of opportunities to get together with other farms to analyze expected production costs and help them prepare for the production season ahead.

The Extension offices of Oconto, Marinette, Shawano, and Langlade counties are sponsoring a workshop at 10:15 a.m. Jan. 17, at Lena Town Hall, 6087 Goatsville Road, Lena.

M&O cross country all-conference honors listed

Several area athletes have been named to the Marinette & Oconto Conference cross country all-conference teams.

Gillett Secondary School had one girl on the first team and three on the second team.

Hope Soper was named to the first team. She was also named most outstanding runner. Second-team honors went to Sophie Limberg, Lily Hansen and Maggie Kaczmarek.

Suring’s Georgia Gerndt was named to the first team, as was Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy’s Aspynn Anderson.

Lena/STAA’s Adrena Rabas was named to the second team.

Graef named Peninsula Conference’s top defensive player

Logan Graef, a senior linebacker from Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy, is the 2023 defensive player of the year for the Peninsula Conference all-conference football team.

Named to the first team defense were Graef along with teammate Colt Miller, a sophomore playing defensive lineman.

Second-team defensive honors were earned by: Lena/STAA junior Ty Shallow, defensive back; Gillett junior LaVonnzell Smith, linebacker; Suring senior Trent Van Den Elzen, linebacker; Lena/STAA sophomore Lucas Heimke, defensive lineman; and Suring junior Michael Bailey, punter.

M&O volleyball all-conference honors posted

Named to the Marionette & Oconto all-conference volleyball first team were Eva Brooks of Lena, Hailey Elsner of Gillett and Bailey Stuart of Suring.

Second-team honors were awarded to Peyton Dorow and Alabama Lambert, both of Lena.

Honorable mention status was awarded to Gillett’s Reece Franti, as well as Suring’s Emma Kristof and MaShya Seefeldt.

Lena Dairy Fest back in village Sept. 8-9

The Lena Dairy Fest, sponsored by the Lena Lions, will be held Sept. 8-9, at St. Anne Catholic Church, 221 E. Main St., Lena.

The event will kick off with a truck pull at 6 p.m. Sept. 8 followed by fireworks at dusk. Sept. 9 will start with the Stampede 5K walk-run at 8 a.m., followed by the parade at 10:30 a.m.

All events are free, including admission into the tractor and truck pull. No pets or carry-ins will be allowed at the event.
