Fans, athletes celebrated the best of times in 2023

The past 12 months have seen a variety of firsts, some state titles and plenty of impressive competitions by local high school athletes, as well as a few non-school related top stories.

Here’s a look at some of those individuals and teams that made the headlines in 2023.

Wrestling

Bonduel High School’s Maddy Sokolski capped off a perfect wrestling season with a state title in the girls 138-pound weight class during the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Individual State Tournament, which ran Feb. 23-25 at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Pulaski sees Legion season end at AA State

After seven weeks of American Legion baseball this summer, the Pulaski Legion squad saw its season come to an end at the AA State tournament in Ashwaubenon. Pulaski went 0-2 during the weekend.

In its first game, Pulaski played Region 1 winner River Falls. Despite River Falls taking the victory 11-1, this game was much closer than it seemed as a series of errors led to countless unearned runs that ultimately doomed Pulaski in the end.

Wittenberg earns 16U runner-up finish at state

Coming off a very successful regular season, the Wittenberg 16U Legion team turned their attention the the state tournament in Waupun in late July. Looking to start their double elimination tournament with a bang, Wittenberg rode the arm of Hayden Miller to pick up an 8-3 win over Campbellsport.

Pulaski punches ticket to state

Despite the 16U and 17U tournaments taking place over the weekend, you also had varsity Legion regionals getting underway as a trio of local teams aimed to continue their season for at least one more week. Not all of the results were the best, but there were some great showings including in AA where Pulaski punched their ticket to the state tournament next weekend in Ashwaubenon following a pair of impressive games Saturday.

Patriots rally falls short in regional game

Any time a team enters regional play and have to face the defending state champs in your first game, there is a sense of pressure that comes with it.

That pressure was evident early on as the Appleton Doubledays opened up an 8-2 lead over Shawano after pushing across five runs in the fourth inning July 14.

Wittenberg doubles up the Diamond Cats

With just one week remaining in the American Legion season until regionals, Wittenberg is hoping to get into a nice groove leading into the postseason.

Following its 4-2 win over Clintonville on July 13, Wittenberg is heading in that direction as a strong pitching performance helped Wittenberg take down the Diamond Cats.

Big innings loom large in Pulaski’s loss to Denmark

If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best, and Denmark has been the best for the past three seasons. Despite an overall great effort from the Pulaski Legion team, it was a pair of three-run innings that did them in as Denmark came to town and picked up the 7-1 win July 11.

Zierdan’s complete game gives Shawano win

With the American Legion Regional tournament just around the corner, teams want to be playing their best ball in an effort to advance to the state tournament.

That is no different for Shawano and Pulaski whose summer seasons haven’t gone as planned thus far. With fewer than five combined wins between the two of them, it was Shawano getting back on track as Alex Zierdan tossed a four-hit shutout to lead the way for a 10-0 win July 6.

Witt-Birn’s Waupekenay tosses no-hitter against Pulaski

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood Legion baseball team broke a five-game losing streak when Nathan Waupekenay threw a no-hitter in a 5-1 victory over Pulaski on June 28 in Wittenberg.

Waupekenay made quick work of the Pulaski offense, striking out nine and walking two across seven innings.

Shawano 5

Clintonville 4

Shawano rallied past Clintonville in a June 29 matchup in Shawano.

Jerzy Brocker and Alex Zierden each tallied three hits and scored twice for Shawano. Carsen Herm chipped in two hits.

Dylan Hodkiewicz earned the win on the mound after working the first six innings. Herm tossed a scoreless seventh inning to pick up the save.

Seymour 13

Pulaski 4

Pulaski fell to Seymour in a June 29 game in Seymour. The hosts scored nine runs in the opening inning.
