Parham sentenced for reservation fentanyl deal

An ex-Keshena man who sold fentanyl to an undercover officer at the Menominee Casino Resort was sentenced Monday in federal court to 12 years in prison to be followed by eight years supervised release.

According to court documents, Charles A. Parham, also known as “Red” or “Cuzzo,” met with an undercover police office on Sept. 29, 2023, when Parham sold the officer about 5 grams of heroin.

On Oct. 11, 2023, Parham, 42, arranged by text message to sell 20 grams of fentanyl to the officer for $2,000.

Tornado touches down in Menominee, Oconto counties

A tornado touched down near Keshena and stayed on the ground for nearly 9 miles when severe thunderstorms swept across much of northeast Wisconsin late June 24 into the early morning hours of June 25.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Green Bay office determined the EF1 tornado was on the ground for five minutes starting at 2:27 a.m. June 25. Estimated peak winds were 98 miles per hour.

Officials said the tornado was on the ground for 8.9 miles from Keshena in Menominee County to Berry Lake in Oconto County. The maximum width of the tornado was 90 yards.

Teaching lodge constructed at CMN

The College of Menominee Nation is constructing a teaching lodge on its Keshena campus in hopes of reconnecting with the past and using its knowledge to help students move into the future.

During a presentation May 28, CMN President Chris Caldwell described the lodge as a resource to continue the teachings of the Menominee people.

“We need to have this teaching lodge for interns, students and the community,” Caldwell said. “We all need to take responsibility for properly putting up this teaching lodge and advance the purpose of the college with this in mind.”

Veteran taking part in D-Day events in Normandy

A Keshena man will be among the American troops who will participate in the D-Day invasion in Normandy, France.

Navy veteran Vaughn Collicott, 100, will join about 70 veterans from across the United States on a trip honoring the 80th anniversary of D-Day, which will culminate in a visit to Normandy on June 6. The trip was organized by the Greatest Generation Foundation.

Collicott was a fire control technician working in the electrical center aboard the USS Meredith.

Fifth graders experience nature up close

A dozen classes of fifth graders spent their May 9 school day at a Wittenberg orchard where they increased their knowledge of the environment through discussions and interactive sessions in nine categories of conservation.

Keshena man indicted for kidnapping, intent to murder

A Keshena man was indicted April 24 in federal court with kidnapping, assault with the intent to murder and domestic assault by strangulation.

According to the indictment, John V. Miller Jr., 42, allegedly strangled a former girlfriend March 29 until she was unconscious and assaulted her with the intent to kill her. He then allegedly seized her and put her into the trunk of a car in an attempt to conceal his actions.

No further information was available from the U.S. Attorney’s Office about the case.

Future high school will have different name

The Keshena community has endured for decades with having a high school with Indian as part of its name.

No more.

When it opens later this year, the new high school will be known as Menominee Nation High School, ending an era of having a name that many tribal members feel diminishes and denigrates its people. It was all made possible because of a mission that the high school’s human rights club went on in the last couple of years.

Four Challenge Academy graduates come from Shawano, Keshena

With a festive holiday atmosphere, the Wisconsin Challenge Academy celebrated the graduation of its 51st class during a Dec. 16 ceremony at Baraboo High School.

The graduating class featured 98 cadets from 33 counties, including four cadets from Shawano and Menominee counties. Local graduates were Aaliyah Pyatskowit, Christian Norman and Gunnar Majewski, all of Shawano, and Peter Hawpetoss, of Keshena.

Keshena woman pleads guilty to child neglect

A rural Keshena woman who pleaded guilty to neglecting a child while allegedly maintaining a drug house was sentenced Nov. 20 to three months’ probation.

Michelle E. Grignon, 35, of the Legend Lake area, and Louis J. Chevalier, 32, were both indicted earlier this year on charges of maintaining a drug-involved premises and two counts of child neglect.

Menominee tribal police probe homicide on Chief Little Wave Road

Richard Nacotee, interim Menominee Tribal Police Department chief, confirmed a homicide in Keshena on Jan. 31. A police investigation into the suspected shooting at a residence on Chief Little Wave Road, supported by the FBI, is ongoing, he said.

Nacotee said a male suspect is in tribal custody as of Feb. 1. His identity and that of the victim have not yet been released.
