Girls Basketball: Shawano opens up season with tight win

SHAWANO — The Shawano Community High School girls basketball team got its season off to a positive start on Tuesday, knocking off Merrill 51-45 in a nonconference clash.

Implementing a new defense and trying to get new players accustomed to the varsity level of play, Shawano coach Ryan Koenig knew that a slow start was possible. His worries came true, but the Hawks responded in a big way.

Merrill jumped out to a 16-8 lead a little over halfway through the first half before Shawano found its rhythm.

Tigerton 9

Suring stifled Tigerton to earn a season-opening nonconference win on Tuesday in Suring.

Kylee Stelzer hit five 3-pointers and led Suring with 21 points. Paige Krueger posted a double-double, tallying 10 points and 12 rebounds. Stephanie Huth finished with seven steals, Kelsey Smith grabbed five offensive rebounds and Jaden Bubolz had four assists.

Shawano carried a late first half surge over into the second half to build a 15-point lead before hanging on late for a season-opening victory over Merrill on Tuesday in Shawano.

Girls Basketball: Gillett eyeing state trip with entire team back

GILLETT — The Gillett High School girls basketball team has high aspirations heading into the 2019-20 season.

Gillett is coming off a sectional semifinal appearance and returns every player from that team. The Tigers finished 16-10 overall and 10-6 in the Marinette & Oconto Conference.

GRESHAM — The Gresham Community High School girls basketball enters the 2019-20 season under a new coach and trying to improve its conference standing.

Newell Haffner is the team’s new head coach after the Wildcats went 5-17 overall and 4-8 in the Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division last year.

Haffner will have to replace a couple of key players from that team, but does get back a strong core, led by Valarie Cerveny and Makayla Belongia.

SHAWANO — The Shawano Community High School girls basketball team enters the winter season looking for a host of new players to step up.

The Hawks finished 9-5 in the Bay Conference last year and went 12-10 overall, but will have to replace five key players from that team, including Co-Player of the Year Tori DePerry.

Only four players with significant varsity experience return for coach Ryan Koenig.

Two of those players, juniors Rachel Reed and Avery Dreier, have started for the Hawks in the past. The duo will be looked to as leaders on the court this season.

WITTENBERG — The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School girls basketball team enters the new season with a talented roster and high aspirations.

The Chargers are coming off an up-and-down 2018-19 season in which they went 8-4 in Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division play. Witt-Birn, which is coached by Nick Mechelke, is healthy coming into the season and returns all but two players from last year’s team.

“The Chargers have high expectations this year as we are looking to compete for a conference championship,” said Mechelke, who expects the CWC-East to be strong again.
