A few local high school sports teams have already started competitive play, with the opening night for football coming Aug. 23.

Five teams will take to the field for non-conference action, with all games beginning at 7 p.m.

Scheduled games include Shawano hosting Denmark, Bonduel hosting Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Pulaski hosting Oconomowoc and Oconto Falls traveling to Oconto.

Local teams playing 8-player football will first play Aug. 29, again with all games starting at 7 p.m.

Packers preparing for Family Night

A fun-filled day and evening await fans at Packers Family Night, presented by Bellin Health, on Aug. 3.

All available tickets, as well as all Lambeau Field parking passes, have been sold. Fans who purchased mobile parking passes may enter the Lambeau Field parking lots starting at 1:30 p.m.

The Green Bay Packers training camp opened July 22, and fans are invited to join the team at practice and enjoy a variety of activities to celebrate the return of football.

On July 27, families are invited to join the Packers and Bellin Health for the NFL’s Back Together Saturday initiative by enjoying the Bellin Health Training Camp Village, a fun- and health-focused event to be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Activities will take place in the U.S. Cellular Lot, the parking lot just east of Ray Nitschke Field.

Oconto Youth Football receives Bond grant

The Leon H. and Clymene M. Bond Foundation Inc. has granted Oconto Youth Football a $9,600 grant toward the purchase of new helmets.

“Their support will make a significant impact on our program and help us provide a safer and rewarding experience for all of our young athletes,” said Paul Retzlaff of the organization’s board of directors. “The $9,600 will go towards new helmets to surely help ensure the safety of the players. With their help, we can better protect our kids as they play the sport.”

NFL 2025 draft coming to Green Bay

Detroit is just days away from hosting the 2024 NFL draft, but there are plenty of Green Bay area officials and residents already looking ahead to 2025.

The 2025 NFL draft will be held April 24-26 in and around Lambeau Field and Titletown.

Dillon back on a one-year deal in Green Bay

After the news broke about Josh Jacobs signing with the Packers, fans and media members thought that meant AJ Dillon was on his way out of town.

After battling injuries and a decline in play and on an expiring contract, it seemed likely the marriage between Dillon and the Packers was over. That was not the case though. Green Bay opted to move on from Aaron Jones and bring Dillon back on a one-year deal. It will now be Jacobs and Dillon who will create the one-two punch for Green Bay, not Jacobs and Jones.

With the induction of the new NFL season, the Green Bay Packers front office was fairly busy when it came to organizing who will be on the field next year.

Out of the players who said farewell to the green and gold, there are six notable names who will see themselves on new teams in the coming season: Aaron Jones, David Bakhtiari, De’Vondre Campbell, Jon Runyan Jr., Darnell Savage and Jonathan Owens.

The first move of Green Bay’s free agency when the new season started was the release of longtime tackle Bakhtiari.

While the start of the new NFL season often builds excitement for new faces joining a football team, sometimes retaining players is just as impactful.

For the Green Bay Packers this season, four notable names were retained, including defensive back and kick returner Keisean Nixon. In his two seasons with the Packers, Nixon has proved that he can be a gamechanger, most notably on special teams. In both of the seasons, Nixon led the NFL in kick return yardage, setting himself up with two straight First-Team All-Pro selections.

New faces excited for next chapter in Green Bay

Brian Gutekunst’s last two draft classes have gone exactly according to plan. He found players that were both impactful as rookies and players that look to building blocks for the foreseeable future.

That sets up for the Packers to need a war chest of salary cap space to give second contracts to all of those players as soon as next offseason, but that is a good problem to have.
