Shawano's Chelberg takes 29th at cross-country sectional

Shawano Community High School freshman cross-country runner Grace Chelberg placed 29th at the Division 1 Hortonville Sectional on Friday.

Chelberg completed the course in 21 minutes, 37.1 seconds. The freshman came up short of qualifying for state.

The individual runners that advanced to state placed inside the top 12. Kaukauna and Kimberly placed first and second, respectively to qualify for state as teams.

WIAA releases fall state event sites

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association identified the state event hosts for boys and girls cross-country, boys soccer and boys and girls volleyball on Thursday.

The state boys and girls cross-country meets will be held Oct. 31.

Division 1 runners will compete at Arrowhead High School. Division 2 state will be held at Colby High School, while Division 3 runs at Maple Grove Venues in West Salem.

Girls volleyball state is scheduled for Nov. 7.

No Marion cross-country runners advance to sectionals

Marion High School didn't advance any individuals to sectionals after competing at the Division 3 Rosholt Subsectional on Tuesday.

Each Marion team only had four runners compete, so neither qualified for a score.

Jaden Stuhr led the boys team after completing the course in 20 minutes, 28.95 seconds. Jesse Trebus (22:57.66), Myles Peterson (23:55.86) and Jack VanKooy (28:24.35) also competed for the boys.

Gillett girls, boys cross-country teams qualify for sectionals

The Gillett Secondary School girls and boys cross-country teams each earned first-place finishes at the Division 3 Lena Subsectional on Tuesday to qualify for sectionals.

The girls posted a team score of 32, while the boys tallied a 42.

Suring's Olivia Noack and Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy co-op's Max Beyer also qualified for sectionals as individuals.

Derek Hanson won the boys race and led the Gillett boys. He completed the course in 17 minutes, 24.9 seconds.

Shawano Community High School freshman Grace Chelberg qualified for sectionals after a top-10 finish at the Division 1 Neenah Subsectional on Tuesday in Neenah.

Chelberg posted a time of 20 minutes, 49.9 seconds to place seventh and finish among the top-five individuals who were not on a sectional-qualifying team (Neenah and Wisconsin Rapids).

The Shawano girls team took fourth with a score of 96, while the boys came in fifth with a 122.

Witt-Birn boys cross-country team qualifies for sectionals

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School boys cross-country team posted a second-place finish at the Division 2 Oconto Falls Subsectional on Tuesday at The Patriot Golf Club in Abrams to qualify for sectionals.

Witt-Birn's score of 51 was behind just Tomahawk (39).

Athlete Profile: Jack Johnson

The Bonduel High School cross-country teams have ended the past couple of seasons competing at the state meet. Jack Johnson has been a part of the last two state-qualifying boys teams and is enjoying a strong senior season.

In the final week of the regular season, Johnson placed 13th at the Central Wisconsin Conference Championships, which earned him second team all-conference honors.

In his two state appearances, Johnson has finished as the team’s fourth-best finisher. He’s often been the boys team top finisher this fall.

Gillett girls win M&O Cross-Country Meet behind trio

The Gillett Secondary School girls cross-country team won the Marinette & Oconto Conference Meet on Thursday in Pembine.

Sylvia Hansen, Carleigh Kaczmarek and Ryann Wagner claimed first, second and third place, respectively, to lead the girls team to the top finish.

Gillett’s boys team didn’t qualify for a team score, but all three of runners placed in the top 10, led by a first-place finish from Derek Hanson.

Hansen won the girls race with a time of 21 minutes, 29.3 seconds. The M&O Meet started three years ago, and Hansen has won each race.

Bonduel girls, Witt-Birn boys 2nd at CWC Cross-Country Championships

The Bonduel girls and Wittenberg-Birnamwood boys cross-country teams each secured second-place finishes at the Central Wisconsin Conference Championships on Thursday in Pittsville.

The Bonduel girls finished with the same score as Amherst (43), but Amherst had the better finish from its sixth runner, so it claimed first. The Witt-Birn boys had a score of 67, behind Pacelli (41).

Shawano boys cross-country team 2nd, girls 3rd at Bay Championship

The Shawano Community High School cross-country teams competed in a unique Bay Conference Championship on Saturday in Seymour.

With only three conference teams in action, the Shawano boys placed second and the girls third.

Due to coronavirus concerns, Bay Conference meets this fall typically only featured two teams running against each other. On rare occasions, there would be three teams squaring off.
