Cross-Country: Bonduel girls, Witt-Birn boys each take sixth at invite

IOLA — The Bonduel girls and Wittenberg-Birnamwood boys cross-country teams each turned in sixth-place finishes Tuesday while competing in the T-Bird Invitational at Iola Winter Sports Park.

Bonduel earned a team score of 161 and was led by the 16th-place finish of Kara Troxel in 22 minutes, 32.54 seconds.

Placing in the top 40 for the Bears were Kalleigh Schroeder (23:53.88) and Madison Kurey (24:01.33), taking 35th and 37th, respectively. Breanna Schnell (25:11.28) and Kendra Troxel (25:20.69) capped the team score, placing 60th and 63rd, respectively.

Suring girls take 10th at invitational

The Suring girls earned a team score of 275 to take 10th place at the T-Bird Invitational at Iola Winter Sports Park on Tuesday.

Olivia Noack led the Eagles with a 49th-place finish with a time of 24 minutes, 44.65 seconds. Hailey Thomson (25:24.91) took 64th, while Chantelle VandenElzen (27:46.71) came in 94th.

Carley Geniesse (29:32.74) and Madison VandenElzen (29:37.81) capped the team score.

Shawano girls take 7th, boys 9th at invite

Shawano opened its fall season on Friday, competing in the Appleton West Terror Invitational at Winagamie Golf Course in Neenah on Friday. The girls finished with a score of 203 to take seventh, while the boys were ninth with a mark of 244.

Bonduel cross-country teams hoping for more success

BONDUEL — Area cross-country teams are heading into the season hoping to achieve different things.

Bonduel expects another big season with a strong core of returning runners back in the mix, while Gresham/Bowler, Menominee Indian and Marion are all looking for runners to step up.

With almost all of last year’s runners back, Bonduel hopes to have both its boys and girls team qualify for state again. Both teams finished first at sectionals under coach Diane Schnell last year.

SHAWANO — High school cross-country teams are ready to begin the fall season after opening practice Aug. 19.

Shawano heads into the year with lofty goals as a strong core of runners is back. Clintonville is under the direction of a new coach, while Wolf River Lutheran will try to find success despite low roster numbers.

Coming off a season in which the girls team won its first Bay Conference title and the boys claimed second, expectations are high for Shawano, which is coached by Steve Stomberg.

WITTENBERG — The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School boys and girls cross-country teams face different obstacles as the season gets started.

The boys team returns each runner from last year, including four that landed on all-conference teams, so expectations are high. The girls return a pair of all-conference runners, but numbers are down, leaving little room for error.

OCONTO FALLS — Area cross-country teams opened practice on Aug. 19 in preparation for the fall season.

Oconto Falls heads into the season looking to replace several seniors, while Gillett, Suring and the Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy co-op return most of their runners from last year.
