Shawano teams take down Xavier

The Shawano boys and girls teams each picked up a Bay Conference win against Xavier on Thursday in Shawano. Both Shawano teams posted scores of 23.

Shawano's Odessa Arce was the top finisher in the girls race, completing the course in 20 minutes, 46 seconds.

Bonduel girls cross-country team places 2nd at invitational

The Bonduel High School girls cross-country team got its fall season off to a strong start, placing second at the T-Bird Invitational on Monday in Iola.

The Bears earned a team score of 36, behind only Amherst (22).

Kara Troxel led the way for Bonduel with a fifth-place finish in 22 minutes, 49.67 seconds. Ashlyn Kurey (23:07.67) and Kalleigh Schroeder (23:39.94) came in eighth and ninth, respectively.

Kendra Troxel (24:01.36) crossed the finish line in 11th, while Breanna Schnell (24:11.39) placed 13th to round out the team score.

The Shawano Community High School cross-country teams have experienced a number of memorable moments over the past couple of years, and Lydia Beyer has been a big part of that success.

Beyer is now competing in her senior season and hoping to not only help her team achieve more good memories, but also be a leader for her teammates.

Beyer opened the season with a fourth-place individual finish at the team’s Bay Conference dual against Menasha on Aug. 27 in Shawano. The Shawano girls team posted a perfect score on the night.

Athlete Profile: Tommy Bruski

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School boys cross-country team came into the season needing to replace some talented runners if it hoped to finish the season near the top of the Central Wisconsin Conference again, and senior Tommy Bruski is among the runners ready for the challenge.

Bruski opened the fall season as the team’s top finisher at the Pittsville Invite on Aug. 27. He crossed the finish line in 11th place after completing the course in 20 minutes, 29.7 seconds.

Bruski’s finish helped the boys take second as a team.

Oconto Falls cross-country teams hoping to build off returning runners

The Oconto Falls High School cross-country team will try and blend returning talent with some new runners to turn in a successful fall season.

Each team, which are coached by Lon Ludemann, returns three starters from a season ago.

Back from the boys team is senior Braden Uelmen, junior Joe Adams and sophomore Landon Budz.

Clintonville cross-country teams back with plenty of familiar names

The Clintonville High School cross-country teams head into competition with many of the same names on the roster as last year, giving the program reason to hope for a strong fall season.

The boys team returns four of its five runners that represented the team at the 2019 North Eastern Conference Championships — including junior Jesse Wilson, who won the race and went on to compete at state for the second time.

“Some team goals for this fall are to take advantage of our opportunity to compete during this weird time and put it all out there every race,” said Wilson.

The Shawano Community High School cross-country teams head into the fall season with lofty goals as they boast talented and deep rosters.

Both teams, which are coached by Steve Stomberg, were dominant in a season-opening Bay Conference dual meet against Menasha on Thursday in Shawano, with the boys and girls posting perfect scores.

The top six finishers in the girls race were from Shawano, while the top seven boys to cross the finish line were Hawks.

Gillett girls 3rd, boys 6th in season-opening invitational

Gillett's cross-country teams competed in the Two Rivers Invitational on Thursday to open the fall season, with the girls coming in third and the boys placing sixth.

Sylvia Hansen posted a time of 21 minutes, 6 seconds to place fourth and lead the Gillett girls. Ryann Wagner (21:38) and Carleigh Kaczmarek (22:08) took seventh and ninth, respectively. Alaina Herzog (23:53) took 19th, while Angela Mosconi (24:10) placed 25th to cap the team score.

Small Gresham/Bowler cross-country teams looking for runners to step up

The Gresham/Bowler cross-country teams have a limited number of runners this fall and are looking for some athletes to step up and lead the way.

The boys co-op lost its top runner from the past few seasons, and coach Chad Thorne sees a number of runners who could potentially fill that role.

Senior Zach Young, juniors Donnie Edwards and Isaiah Bestul and freshman Bryson Nelson are the runners that will form the boys roster. Bestul and Edwards were the team’s second- and third-best runners at the team’s sectional meet in 2019.

Football, volleyball seasons postponed at Menominee Indian High School

Menominee Indian High School announced Monday morning that it was postponing its fall football and girls volleyball seasons. The school’s cross-country team will still participate in the fall season.

The announcement was made in a press release from Wendell Waukau, the superintendent of the Menominee Indian School District.
