Antetokounmpo brothers to take part in All-Star event

Giannis Antetokounmpo will team up with two of his brothers to compete in a revamped Skills Challenge during the NBA’s All-Star Saturday night on Feb. 19.

The event is now a team format, and the NBA Finals MVP from the Milwaukee Bucks will take part in it — along with Thanasis, who also plays for the Bucks, and Alex, of the NBA G League’s Raptors 905.

The NBA also announced the competitors for the slam dunk and 3-point contests that will take place Feb. 19 in Cleveland.

Bucks’ Antetokounmpo feeling fine but monitoring his knee

Giannis Antetokounmpo says he feels fine as he prepares for the Milwaukee Bucks’ title defense but will be careful with the left knee that he hyperextended during the championship run.

Antetokounmpo missed the final two games of the Eastern Conference finals after hurting his knee but returned to earn MVP honors in the NBA Finals. He scored 50 points in a title-clinching game six victory over the Phoenix Suns.

Bucks hire Lisa Byington as TV play-by-play broadcaster

Lisa Byington is making history as the Milwaukee Bucks’ new play-by-play voice on their television broadcasts.

The Bucks announced the hiring Wednesday and said Byington is the first woman to work as a full-time television play-by-play announcer for any major men’s professional sports team.

Byington replaces Jim Paschke, who retired after 35 seasons as the team’s main television play-by-play broadcaster.

One month after leading the Milwaukee Bucks to their first NBA title in half a century, Giannis Antetokounmpo is teaming up with the city’s other major pro sports franchise by joining the Milwaukee Brewers’ ownership group.

“Man, this is unbelievable,” Antetokounmpo said Aug. 20 at a news conference. “This is a dream come true for a kid from Sepolia, Athens, Greece, born from immigrant parents. I could have never imagined I would be in this position.”

Forward Thanasis Antetokounmpo has re-signed with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Antetokounmpo, an older brother of Bucks forward and two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, has played for Milwaukee each of the last two seasons. The 6-foot-6 forward played 57 games with three starts this past season and averaged 2.9 points, 2.2 rebounds and 9.7 minutes.

The 29-year-old Antetokounmpo appeared in 13 playoff games during the Bucks’ run to the NBA title.

He has played in 79 career regular-season games. Antetokounmpo played two games for the New York Knicks in 2015-16.

Bucks acquire Grayson Allen from Grizzlies

The Milwaukee Bucks have acquired guard Grayson Allen from the Memphis Grizzlies for guard Sam Merrill and two future second-round picks.

Allen, 25, averaged 10.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 25.2 minutes for the Grizzlies this past season. He played 50 games and made 38 starts.

His 2020-21 season included a 26-point performance in a 128-115 victory over the Bucks.

Allen has shot 42.3% overall and 38.1% from 3-point range during his three-year career. Utah drafted him 21st overall out of Duke in 2018.

Bucks GM: No knee procedure necessary for Antetokounmpo

Milwaukee Bucks general manager Jon Horst says Giannis Antetokounmpo doesn’t need any type of offseason procedure for the left knee that the two-time MVP hyperextended during the team’s NBA title run.

“He’s fine,” Horst said July 30. “I can’t explain it, but he’s fine.”

Antetokounmpo hurt his knee in game four of the Eastern Conference Finals when he landed awkwardly after attempting to block a dunk attempt by Atlanta Hawks center Clint Capela. Antetokounmpo later said he worried that he’d be out for a year.

Bucks trade down, get 2 forwards in draft

The Milwaukee Bucks traded down in the second round of the NBA draft July 29 and selected a couple of frontcourt players in Sandro Mamukelashvili of Seton Hall and Georgios Kalaitzakis of Greece.

The Bucks made these moves a week after their parade that celebrated their first NBA title since 1971.

For most of my life, and especially the last decade or so, Wisconsin sports teams have provided plenty instances of heartbreak. The curse was finally broken with the Milwaukee Bucks’ NBA title.

The Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers and Wisconsin Badgers have provided their share of heartbreak, with the Bucks joining the party in recent years.

This could have been the offseason in which Giannis Antetokounmpo entered the free-agent market and perhaps teamed up with another superstar to try winning multiple NBA titles together.

Antetokounmpo instead will spend the summer celebrating a championship he won with the team that picked him.

Leading the Bucks to their first NBA crown in half century rewarded Antetokounmpo for his December decision to sign a supermax extension with Milwaukee. Antetokounmpo averaged 35.2 points, 13.2 rebounds and five assists to help the Bucks beat the Phoenix Suns 4-2 in the NBA Finals.
