CWEC talks to fourth graders about electrical safety

During May, to help promote Electrical Safety Month, Central Wisconsin Electric Cooperative (CWEC) once again provided electricity safety demonstrations to fourth-grade students at six elementary schools in the CWEC service area.

Elementary schools included those in Birnamwood, Bowler, Iola, Rosholt, Tigerton and Wittenberg.

Teen rehab center proposed near Bowler

An Adolescent Recovery and Wellness Center (ARWC) could soon find its way to the Stockbridge-Munsee Community.

A public hearing on the proposal will be held at 9 a.m. June 15 at the Orion Event Center at North Star Mohican Casino Resort.

The $18 million ARWC would be operated by the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council (GLITC).

Fifth graders experience nature up close

A dozen classes of fifth graders spent their May 9 school day at a Wittenberg orchard where they increased their knowledge of the environment through discussions and interactive sessions in nine categories of conservation.

Bowler woman takes part in college’s hemp research work

Universities are researching a variety of things as students work to advance their knowledge of the universe, and Maya Desai from Bowler is one of them.

Desai recently presented her research to lawmakers and other influential people in Madison as part of the Research in the Rotunda program. The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point student presented information about the compost application rate needed for sustainable hemp agriculture in Wisconsin.

Although the western side of Shawano County tends to be quieter than neighbors further east, there were plenty of events that made headlines in the past year in Wittenberg, Birnamwood and other communities.

Mattoon’s revitalization of a former elementary school and the reopening of its doors as a learning institution made the top story of 2023 for the Wittenberg Enterprise and Birnamwood News. Coming up close behind was Matsche Farms working with DTE Vantage to turn farm waste into renewable natural gas.

Bowler home destroyed by fire

One person was injured and a home was destroyed by fire the afternoon of Dec. 2 in Bowler.

Bowler Area Fire District Fire Chief Dan Ladwig said the homeowner was taken to a hospital, but he had no other information as to why the man was treated.

The West Rollman Street home was engulfed in flames when firefighters first arrived just before noon.

“I have the shop (Ladwig’s Tire and Lube) right across from the post office,” the fire chief said.

New ag, CTE additions open at Bowler School

The Bowler School District is excited about new additions to the school that are big wins for its agriculture and technical education programs.

The district held ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the two additions located behind the school on Aug. 29. The project cost $3.4 million, with the district borrowing $3 million that will be paid back over 10 years, while the rest came from grants.

Mobile construction lab to aid Bowler students

The Bowler School District will be able to expand its efforts to teach the construction trades thanks to a mobile lab developed in partnership with the College of Menominee Nation, the National Indian Education Association and Core Learning Exchange.

The mobile lab, which made its debut Aug. 11 at CMN, is expected to attract more students to the trades with virtual reality setups and space for make-and-take projects.

Kietlinski named top boys athlete

Bowler High School three-sport athlete Emmitt Kietlinski has been named the NEW Media Inc. Boys Athlete of the Year after a memorable senior season.

Kietlinski began the school competing on the Bowler/Gresham 8-player football team before starring for the Bowler basketball team. He then was one of the top boys athletes in the state, and eventually the country, as a track and field athlete this spring.

Area high school boys track and field teams and individual athletes enjoyed a productive spring season, with plenty of top finishes along the way.

Bowler’s Emmitt Kietlinski separated himself from other individuals as the season went along and picked up a pair of top-two finishes at the state meet on his way to being named the NEW Media Inc. Boys Athlete of the Year.
