Athlete Profile: Karter Schroeder

Bonduel’s Karter Schroeder is eyeing a second-straight state track and field trip as his senior season winds down.

Schroeder made it to state in the high jump as a junior and placed 13th after clearing 5 feet, 10 inches.

On May 13 at the Central Wisconsin Conference-Large Division Meet, he placed sixth in the high jump after clearing 5-8. He was on two relay teams that placed in the top five and claimed 13th in the 400-meter dash.

Schroeder plans to continue his track and field career at UW-Stevens Point.

Athlete Profile: Chaela Rabas

Lena High School senior Chaela Rabas has been a steady player for the St. Thomas Aquinas Academy/Lena softball co-op during her high school career. Rabas has been the team’s catcher for the past three years.

After having her freshman season wiped out because of the pandemic, Rabas landed on the Marinette & Oconto Conference second team as a sophomore. She made the jump up to the first team as a junior and hopes to accomplish the same feat to cap her senior season.

Gillett Secondary School has produced several talented long-distance runners over the past few years. Evan Peterson is part of that talented group and is hoping to make some more memories as he winds down his senior track season.

Peterson, who has been to state in each cross-country and track season he could have, has several strong finishes to his name this spring — including a first-place finish in the 1,600-meter run at the Peshtigo Invitational on May 4. He was second in the 1,600 at the Oshkosh Boys Small Invitational on March 16.

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School softball team is under the direction of a new coach this spring. Change, especially during senior seasons, isn’t always easy for seniors to accommodate, but Jami Wendler is relishing the chance to lead the Chargers during their new era.

Wendler was a second-team all-conference finisher in her junior season, when Witt-Birn went just 2-12 in conference play. As of May 7, Wendler had helped the team to three conference wins already.

Athlete Profile: Braden Vandermoss

Oconto Falls senior Braden Vandermoss has enjoyed a strong high school career and is putting together another big season for the Panthers this spring.

Vandermoss, who made the North Eastern Conference second team last spring, had a hit and scored in a game against Clintonville on April 25. He pitched and delivered two hits in a doubleheader against Wrightstown on April 22,

The senior had two hits in both ends of a doubleheader against Freedom on April 18.

Athlete Profile: Nakiyah Henning

The Bonduel High School softball team has hopes of winning the Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division title for a second consecutive year. Senior Nakiyah Henning hopes to help lead the Bears to that goal and many more.

After making the CWC-East second team last season, Henning is off to a strong start to this season.

Henning homered and drove in five runs in the team’s win over Menominee Indian on April 27. She posted three hits and earned the win in the circle in a victory over Iola-Scandinavia on April 24.

Athlete Profile: Mason Meverden

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School baseball team enjoyed a strong spring season in 2022 and carried that into the summer, ending the season competing at state. Mason Meverden was a big part of the two team’s success, and he’s off to a strong start this spring.

Meverden earned the win on the mound in the team’s conference win over Iola-Scandinavia on April 10, striking out 10 batters over five innings while surrendering just one hit and two walks. At the plate in that game, Meverden drove in a run, walked once and scored a run.

Athlete Profile: Gianna Logue

Gianna Logue doesn’t always fill up a stat sheet, but she’s an unquestioned leader for the Pulaski High School girls soccer team and is one of the better players in the entire area.

Logue was named to the Fox River Classic Conference first team last spring as a defender, and still led the team in goals and assists. She was an honorable mention selection in her sophomore season, her first high school season after her freshman season was wiped out by the pandemic.

Athlete Profile: Jaden Stuhr

Marion High School’s Jaden Stuhr has helped the baseball team get off to perfect start to the spring season.

On the mound, Stuhr tossed 4⅔ no-hit innings against Tigerton on April 11, striking out 10 batters. He then struck out 11 batters over five innings against Northland Lutheran/Wisconsin Valley Lutheran on April 13.

At the plate, Stuhr had a bases-clearing triple against Tigerton, while also scoring twice. He tallied two hits, three RBIs and scored three runs against Bowler on April 11. Stuhr then had a single, walk, two stolen bases and a RBI against NL/WVL.

Athlete Profile: Abby Swartz

The Tigerton High School softball team hopes to compete for a Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division title this spring. Senior Abby Swartz figures to play a big role in the team’s success after making the CWC-North first team in each of the past two springs.

In a loss to Marathon on April 13, Swartz doubled, drove in a run and scored once.

In the team’s doubleheader against Marion on April 10, Swartz scored twice in game one and then got on base five times in game two, while also scoring twice and driving in one.
