Maddy Heling, an entrepreneurship major from Shawano, conducted undergraduate research at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater during the 2025 fall semester.

The Undergraduate Research, Innovative and Creative Activities (URICA) program offers a variety of programs aimed to connect students with faculty mentors and provide them with research opportunities.

Ho-Chunk educator builds traditional ciiporoke structure

Outside Madison’s Wingra School on a sunny fall afternoon, Ho-Chunk artist and horticulturist Lightning New Rider was busy measuring canvas and preparing twine.

He was there to help the students refurbish the school’s ciiporoke, a Ho-Chunk structure made with bent tree saplings tied together to make a frame and often covered with natural materials like birch tree bark or woven mats — or, in this case, canvas.

Cinnamon rolls, melting moments sweet for winter

Cinnamon rolls are a sweet addition to any breakfast, and, in fact, are great to eat at any time of day. Although I enjoy the traditional cinnamon rolls served warm with a glaze, sometimes I also enjoy them cold with cream cheese frosting.

The following local students are among the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater scholarship recipients receiving financial awards for the 2025-26 academic year

Evan Yuma, Oconto Falls, who is studying Finance, won the Karl E Fraedrich-Admissions and Chancellor Scholars.

Lauren Brovold, Bonduel, who is studying marketing, won the Rising Warhawk Scholarship.
