At the end of December, I wrote a column about how we sportsmen should consider passing on our hunting, fishing and trapping heritage to the next generation.

Wisconsin has about 100,000 fewer deer hunters today than it had in 2000, during the peak of the state’s harvest. Young people are busy with school sports, video games, social media and dating, and they are just not taking up hunting or fishing like they once did.

As we approach Easter, I truly feel it is the most important day of the year. Our Father God in His great agape love and unmerited grace and mercy, paved a way for us to escape our sinful nature and sure death. He set a plan in place for His Son to pay a penalty we deserved. Jesus did not warrant it but took it upon Himself to pay.

Bob Bucher had watched enough people tapping their maple trees and bottling syrup that one year he decided to do it himself.

“I saw a few people doing it and thought it would be interesting,” the Town of Richmond man said in mid-March. “Like they say, once you start it, you’re hooked.”

He and his wife, Cindy, have been making maple syrup the past seven years. Last month, they tapped 54 trees.

Shawano County Farm Bureau announced recently that Kurowski Dairy will host the 2026 Shawano County Brunch on the Farm from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 28.

The event will give community members the opportunity to explore a traditional family dairy farm and take part in a morning packed with family-friendly activities.
