OCONTO FALLS: Louis Founder, employed in the wood room in the mill of the Falls Manufacturing Co., had the misfortune of getting his hand injured yesterday morning by the barker on which he is employed.

HICKORY: Thomas E. Smith and son James Smith of Hickory, later town clerk of Maple Valley, came down last Friday morning.

OCONTO COUNTY: Diploma examinations will be held on May 7 or 8 in a number of schools throughout the county, and the county commencement will be held on June 1.

OCONTO: George Gain’s truck dray was struck on the Pecor Street crossing by the northbound passenger train due here at 3:05 last night and his little son Leonard, 9, was dangerously injured.

UNDERHILL: Otto Klatt was arrested Wednesday night for going the speed of 50 mph on School Street. The arrest was made by Marshall Herman Arndt, marshal for the village of Gillett. Klatt was brought before the court and paid a $10 fine plus court costs.

GILLETT: “Daddy Long-Legs,” a charming comedy in four acts by Jean Webster, is soon to be presented by the Seniors of the Gillett High School. The cast consisting of 25 characters is busy rehearsing every night under the direction of Mrs. Irene Bathke and Norman Sorensen.

MORGAN: Another rare Native American ax was found last fall by Ed Young, who owns a farm in Morgan. Young also found a copper penny dated 1843. It is about the size of our current quarter.

SURING: William Boettcher was elected president of the village of Suring in last week’s election.

OCONTO: Michael G. Novitski, Green Bay, was cited for driving while intoxicated when he smashed into a patrol car that was at the scene of an accident.

BRAZEAU: Richard Tilleman’s pickup truck went through the ice on White Potato Lake while he was fishing.

OCONTO COUNTY: Gary Pemrich and Dennis Heise, Oconto County Sheriff’s Deputies, will leave for six weeks recruit school at the Northeast Wisconsin Technical Institute Police Academy.

OCONTO: The voters of the city of Oconto returned Bill Bake to the post of mayor, giving him 812 votes to Garner Sowle’s 707.

OCONTO: A recount of ballots cast April 3 in District 22 revealed the incumbent, Douglas Dorow, lost by four votes instead of one as previously reported. His opponent, Richard Markholm, received 193 votes compared to Dorow’s 189.

GILLETT: The Wisconsin School Music Association has recently announced the selection of Cybelle Egan to the 1990 Wisconsin High School Honors Band. This will mark the second year that Egan has been chosen to participate in the honors project.

OCONTO FALLS: Work is well under way on the expansion of Witt’s Piggly Wiggly on Highland Drive. The addition to the store will add 9,639 square feet.

OCONTO: Dion W. Demmerly, 30, was sentenced to life in prison for intentionally causing the death of James Lane at Lane’s Little Suamico home July 3, 1993.

GILLETT: Jonathan “Mr. B” Board, 51, died April 7. He was a self-employed auto mechanic in Gillett.

GILLETT: Wilmer Jaeger, 61, died on Friday, April 7, at the Shawano Medical Center after a seven-month battle with cancer.

OCONTO: Army Sgt. Shannon R. Frazier has arrived for duty at Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, North Carolina, along with her husband, Army Sgt. Brandon Frazier.

SURING: Ellen Huncosky was congratulated by Jim Thomas, general manager of Evenflo Company in Suring, for 20 years of service.

OCONTO FALLS: The Oconto Falls City Council selected contractors at its March 30 meeting to rebuild the surface of the field and install a well at Memorial Field. The improvements will cost an estimated $41,000.

GILLETT: The Gillett Historical Society has received $25,000 donation from Gillett native Bill Neumann, bringing the total amount of his contributions to $125,000. Neumann is a 1954 graduate of Gillett High School.

OCONTO FALLS: A tavern and boarding house built by Magnus Hertwig in the early 1900s was demolished April 1 after an electrical fire broke out in January in the upstairs front apartment, causing extensive damage.
