Wrestling: Lena’s Misco, Dellise make M&O first team
LENA — The Lena High School wrestling team entered the 2019-20 season with loftier goals than in years past with a bigger roster of wrestlers and was able to put together a strong season after putting in some hard work.
The team was led by several underclassmen, with a trio of wrestlers earning Marinette & Oconto Conference honors.
Freshman Luke Misco and sophomore Cody Dellise each made the all-conference first team. Freshman Sam Marquardt was tabbed an honorable mention.
Misco went 4-0 during the team’s M&O duals. The freshman finished the season with a 32-10 record and wrestled in the Division 3 106-pound weight class at the state tournament in Madison.
“It was an honor to be awarded first team all-conference,” said Misco. “It feels good and now I have a goal to be a four-time all-conference wrestler.
Dellise finished 3-1 in his four conference duals. He went 16-12 on the season and advanced to sectionals in the 160-pound weight class.
“I accomplished what I worked for,” said Dellise. “But I want to be even better — more amazing things to come next year.”
Marquardt also finished 3-1 in his M&O matches. He went 16-21 overall and also made it to sectionals in the 126 weight class.
As a team, Lena finished 2-2 in its conference duals.
Gillett/Suring
The Gillett/Suring co-op had two wrestlers earn conference recognition, with senior Mike VanDenElzen making the first team and freshman Keegan Rattin landing on the honorable mention list.
VanDenElzen posted a 3-1 mark in his M&O matches.
“It’s incredible,” said VanDenElzen of the conference honor. “I am glad to know that all my hard work paid off in a big way that me and my school can be proud of.”
VanDenElzen wrapped up the year with a 9-6 record. He missed qualifying for sectionals by one win — he came in third in the 182-pound weight class at regionals.
Rattin also went 3-1 in his conference matches. The freshman finished 14-17 on the season and also just missed out on qualifying for sectionals after a third-place finish in the 132 weight class at regionals.
Gillett/Suring earned a 1-3 conference dual record.
