Two attorneys have submitted applications to serve as the next Oconto County district attorney, Gov. Tony Evers’ press office said Sept. 26.

Edward Burke Jr., who had been district attorney since 2012, retired Sept. 1 after spending most of the summer on medical leave. Evers accepted applications through Sept. 21.

A statement from the governor’s press office confirmed two applications were received.

“As the application period closed just last week, we are hoping to conduct interviews and name an official appointment in the coming weeks, at which point we can provide additional details once the interview process concludes,” the statement said.

A number of former and present Brown County prosecutors have been handling the case load during Burke’s leave.

The person who gains the appointment is expected to complete the remainder of Burke’s current term through January 2025.
