Six horses killed after crash on Highway 29

Six horses running loose on the roadway were struck by a motor home on Highway 29 in the Town of Hartland early Thursday.

Five of the horses were immediately killed and a sixth sustained a broken leg and had to be dispatched, according to the Shawano County sheriff’s department.

The horses struck and killed were among 20 that had gotten loose from a pen on Highway 29, according to the sheriff’s department. The sheriff’s report lists the owner as Dean Nolan.

The incident was under investigation, and there was no information available as to how the horses got loose.

The highway was partially closed while the owners removed the dead animals. The highway was reopened shortly after 6 a.m.

The motor home sustained some damage, but the extent was not known Thursday morning.
