SHAWANO — The Shawano landfill was open for business again Tuesday, two weeks after a hauler damaged a structural beam supporting the garbage and recycling transfer station.

The facility was deemed unsafe for operation after the Aug. 6 accident.

City staff had expected the repairs to take at least five weeks, but things moved along faster than expected after Chuck Felts of Felts Construction in Shawano reached out to his contacts with Boldt Construction in Madison.

Public Works Director Scott Kroening said all the damaged beam material was replaced with new material.

“They came in with a pile of guys and started taking care of business,” he said.

There was no cost estimate available as of press time for the work done.

In a news release Tuesday, the city offered its appreciation to Felts Construction and Bolt Construction for their immediate response in completing the repairs.

“We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation during this temporary shutdown,” the city wrote.
