Schofield woman killed in Wittenberg crash

WITTENBERG — An 82-year-old Schofield woman died as a result of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash in the town of Wittenberg on Tuesday, according to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department.

The crash occurred at about 6 p.m. on County Road Q east of Cardinal Lane.

The preliminary investigation indicates a 48-year-old Wittenberg man was traveling eastbound on County Road Q and crossed the center line into oncoming traffic, striking a westbound vehicle head-on.

The second vehicle was driven by an 83-year-old Weston woman.

Drivers from both vehicles were taken to a Wausau area hospital. The Weston woman was said to be in stable condition. The condition of the Wittenberg man was unknown.

The Schofield woman, a passenger in the second vehicle, was airlifted to a Wausau area hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased, the sheriff’s department said.

Alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor in the crash, which is still being investigated.
