Mary H. Umland

Mary Helen Umland, 79, of Green Bay, formerly of Shawano, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at Woodside Lutheran Home in Green Bay.

Mary was born in Shawano on March 23, 1943, the daughter of the late Edward and Helen (Ludolph) Wagner. She attended school in Shawano. On Oct. 5, 1963, Mary was united in marriage to Frederick (Fritz) Umland. Fritz preceded her in death on Sept. 1, 1987.

Mary was a stay-at-home mom until Fritz passed away, then went to work at Dearco Glass, Paint and Decorating until her retirement. To be closer to her grandchildren, she moved from Shawano to Green Bay and was a constant presence in their lives. She attended every school and sport activity they participated in, and during the summer she spent many days taking them on adventures. She will always be known for her kind heart, generosity, and love for her family.

Survivors include her children, Barbara (Jon) Syndergaard, of Suamico, Ann (Matthew) Nelson, of Bellevue, and Timothy (Kelsey) Umland, of Oregon; grandchildren Jacob (Sarah) Syndergaard, Dana (fiancé Preston Pethan) Syndergaard, Olivia Nelson, Samuel Nelson, Gabriel Nelson, Wyatt Umland and Kendall Umland; and sisters, Nancy Davis and Katie (Ron) Jesse. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Tom Wagner.

A memorial service for Mary will be held on Friday, July 22, 2022, at noon at Peace Lutheran Church ELCA in Green Bay. Pastor Stuart Dornfeld will officiate. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. and continue until the time of service. Private family interment will take place at Woodland Cemetery in Shawano.

In lieu of flowers and plants, memorials are preferred which will be donated to Mary’s favorite charities.
