The Marion High School boys basketball team will need several new varsity players to step up this winter after graduating most of the players that made up last year’s team.

Marion posted a 7-16 record during the 2019-20 season, including a 5-7 march through the Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division.

Marion does return Branden Beechy, who landed on the all-conference second team last year as a junior. Beechy led the team by scoring over 11 points per game, and averaged over five rebounds.

“I have been practicing every day since our playoff loss against Pittsville with a chip on my shoulder,” said Beechy.

“Our team is inexperienced but they’ll get a hang of things when we get more into the season,” the senior added.

Junior forward Ethan Scheef also started for the Mustangs last year. He averaged about eight points and five rebounds a game.

Senior Carter Goke also returns with some varsity experience for Marion.

“With only a couple returning varsity players returning this year, we will be reloading,” said coach Dave Roe. “Without a typical summer of development, we are definitely behind where we should be heading into the season.

“We are going to have to develop and learn as we go this year. We have a strong freshmen class that hopefully will step up and help fill some of the open spots this year on the team.”
