Marion’s Stuhr named baseball Player of Year in CWC-North
The Marion High School baseball team tied for second place in the Central Wisconsin Conference-North Division this spring and had six players honored for their play after the season wrapped up.
Sophomore Jaden Stuhr was named the conference’s Player of the Year, while junior Alex Zimmerman also made the first team. Senior Carter Goke landed on the second team, while seniors Koy Brei and Myles Peterson and freshman Ryan Malueg were honorable mentions.
Stuhr had a impressive first season of high school ball at the plate and on the mound.
As a hitter, the sophomore had a .423 batting average for the season and drove in 21 runs. He doubled four times, tripled three times and homered twice. He also walked 18 times.
On the bump, he covered 53⅓ innings, striking out 112 batters while walking just 20. He had an earned run average of 1.44.
“Being named conference Player of the Year means a lot to me,” said Stuhr. “I want to thank my coaches and teammates for all of their support, and the good Lord blessing me with the opportunities I have.
“The honor of being Player of the Year gives me the motivation to want more, set higher goals and achieve them. I still have things I believe I can improve on, and I’ll come back next year with those improvements ready to play ball.”
Zimmerman finished his junior season with a .447 batting average and drove in 11 runs. He also walked 15 times and legged out five doubles.
On the mound, Zimmerman logged 18 innings, striking out 24 batters and finishing with a 3.89 ERA.
“It means a lot to me knowing I was able to get second team my freshman year, and I just wanted to get better and better year after year, and getting first team this year is exactly what I wanted,” said Zimmerman. “But I know I can do better next year and hopefully push for being Player of the Year. So I just don’t wanna give up because I can always get better.”
Goke finished the year with a .245 batting average, and also got on base 16 times by walking. He also drove in seven runs.
The senior also covered 17 innings on the mound, striking out 16 batters along the way.
“Making second team all-conference in my last year of high school shows that my hard work and all the support I’ve received have culminated in this honor,” said Goke.
Brei had a .302 batting average for the Mustangs, while also drawing nine walks. The senior drove in 16 runs.
Peterson capped his high school career by hitting for a .297 average and driving in seven runs. He also walked six times.
“Making an all-conference team my senior year means a lot to me and makes me feel I am proving my skills and abilities on the field as a senior leader for my team,” said Peterson.
Malueg hit .321 in his freshman season and legged out five doubles. He also drew seven walks and drove in 12 runs.
“It means a lot since I was just a freshman and got honorable mention, and I know I gotta work harder next year and hopefully get second team or maybe first team,” said Malueg.
Marion went 7-3 in conference play before picking up a playoff win. The Mustangs were eliminated in a regional semifinal contest against Reedsville.
