Michael E. Ingold appeared in court over Zoom on Sept. 6 for a status conference relating to a first-degree intentional homicide on June 25.

Ingold, 57, Shawano, was charged Aug. 1 after an autopsy showed that a victim died from manual strangulation. If convicted, Ingold faces life in prison. Ingold is currently being held on a $1 million cash bond.

During his status conference, Shawano-Menominee County Circuit Court Judge William Kussel Jr. reviewed Ingold’s application for an appointed attorney.

“Looking at the form that you filled — you are not married and you are not employed?” said Kussel, noting that the application did not specify employment.

Ingold told Kussel that he was not married and that he had lost his job when he was incarcerated.

Public Defender Elisabeth Stockbridge said that Ingold is not eligible for an appointed attorney, due to his assets and not his income.

According to Kussel, Ingold did not list his home on the application. After Ingold told Kussel where he lives, Kussel asked him if there was a mortgage, and Ingold said there was not.

Kussel asked Ingold if he knew what the assessed value of the home was based on his taxes.

“I have not paid my taxes in the past few years,” said Ingold.

Moving on from Ingold’s home, Kussel said that Ingold’s application is insufficient.

“If you own a home and don’t have a mortgage, I am sure that perhaps you have assets where you could get a loan and work to get the money,” said Kussel.

Kussel ended the status conference indicating that Ingold’s application was denied and gave Ingold 30 days to apply for a loan and hire an attorney. He scheduled another status conference for Oct. 4 at 1:30 p.m.
