Historical society telling World War I stories

The Shawano County Historical Society, with help from the Shawano Parks and Recreation Department, will present “Headstones: World War I Stories,” at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at Woodlawn Cemetery, 1115 E. Green Bay St., Shawano. This event will be free to the public.

The second in a series of walking cemetery tours over the coming years focusing on veterans, “Headstones” will examine the lives of four of Shawano’s own World War I veterans buried in the cemetery — Arthur Cantwell, Oscar Druckrey, William McKinley Wallrich and Edwin Elefson.

Historical snacks and a special World War I exhibit featuring collections from the Shawano County Historical Society will be available after the event. Bringing lawn chairs is encouraged.

“We are honored to bring back our World War I heroes, some that may have been forgotten in time, so that today’s Shawano community can know what they sacrificed to help make Shawano what it is today,” said Tom Aumann, chairman of the historical society’s headstones committee.
