GIRLS BASKETBALL

Shawano 51

Merrill 45

Shawano carried a late first half surge over into the second half to build a 15-point lead before hanging on late for a season-opening victory over Merrill on Tuesday in Shawano.

Rachel Reed led Shawano with 16 points, while Brianna Wright chipped in 10. Odessa Arce scored eight points off the bench.

Bonduel 54

Roncalli 37

Bonduel eased past Roncalli in a nonconference matchup on Tuesday in Bonduel.

Brenna Hertzfeldt led Bonduel with 14 points, while Allaina Robaidek and Kara Troxel each provided 10 points. Madison Kurey finished with 10 rebounds and eight points, while Breanna Schnell had nine points. Kylie Hoffman also grabbed 10 rebounds.

“Roncalli was very scrappy and played hard,” said Bonduel coach Jerry Reinke. “I thought we rebounded the ball well but were a little loose with the ball at times.”

Menominee Indian 65

Rosholt 45

Behind a big game from Mimi Beaulieu-Morgan, Menominee Indian eased to a Central Wisconsin Conference crossover win over Rosholt on Tuesday in Keshena.

Beaulieu-Morgan led the Eagles by scoring 26 points. Senihseah Wayka chipped in with 12 points, while Alyssa Corn added 11. Alezaha King grabbed a team-leading nine rebounds.

“It was really nice to open up with a win and that’s the most important thing,” said Menominee Indian coach Michael Skenadore. “We had to play through a lot of fouls and turnovers in the first half. Our legs are not quite under us and it was evident our conditioning wasn’t what we need it to be. I thought we shot the ball really well with contributions all around.”

Witt-Birn 45

Peshtigo 26

Wittenberg-Birnamwood held Peshtigo under 25% shooting to claim the nonconference matchup on Tuesday in Peshtigo.

Emma Herb scored 12 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Witt-Birn, while Abi Fraaza had nine points, four steals and 12 rebounds. Olivia Curley scored 10 points, while Reese Rogowski chipped in seven.

“It’s nice to get the first game out of the way. We worked hard on both ends of the floor, our biggest downfall was we didn’t finish around the basket,” said Witt-Birn coach Nick Mechelke. “I didn’t have to say much after the game, the girls knew they didn’t play their best, but we were able to get it done and come out with a win.”
