The Gillett City Council on Jan. 5 formally hired the Green Bay law firm of Hinkfuss, Sickel, Petitjean and Wieting as its city attorney.

Alex Sickel sat in on the meeting, the first time in recent memory that a city attorney attended a regular Gillett City Council meeting.

“I look forward to working with the city, and I plan to be available — if not in person, then with the technology, telephone or video conferencing that’s possible these days,” Sickel said.

He said he had met with Mayor Josh McCarthy to discuss a pending development project in the city, and he mentioned a couple of issues that were discussed during the meeting that the law firm could help with.

“Just being here makes the wheels start turning,” Sickel said.

Tim Schmid served as Gillett city attorney for many years. Then Kate Sloma, another attorney in his firm, took over after he retired until she was appointed a Shawano-Menominee County Circuit Court judge in 2020. Hanaway Ross law firm of Green Bay has had the role since then.
