MADISON — The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School girls swim team earned a trio of 16th-place finishes at the Division 2 State Swimming & Diving Championships at the UW Natatorium on Friday.

Junior McKenna Metropulos took 16th in both her individual events, the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly.

The Witt-Birn 200 freestyle relay team of Metropulos, seniors Christina Thrun and Lauren Bahr and freshman Annika Resch also came in 16th.

“We didn’t do as well as wanted to, but we still made it there and we were proud of ourselves for making it that far,” said Resch.

Metropulos finished the 50 freestyle in 25.58 seconds. Edgewood’s Maeve O’Discoll won the event in 23.3 seconds.

Metropulos posted a time of 1:01.75 in the 100 butterfly. Rhinelander’s Malia Francis took first in 56.23 seconds.

“My two individual events didn’t go how I wanted (them) to go but that’s how swim goes,” said Metropulos. “You have some really good meets and some not so good meets. I’m really thankful to have gotten my goal of competing at state.”

The Chargers relay team earned a time of 1:42.72. Edgewood came in first with a new state record time of 1:34.76.

There were 16 competitors swimming in each event.

The finishes earned Witt-Birn four team points, with the relay team earning two and Metropulos earning one point in both of her individual events.

“I’ve never seen as many people at a swim meet as I did (Friday), and the amount of talented swimmers in that pool felt like something special,” said Bahr. “When you watch the final heat of every event, you can’t help but to become more inspired. I saw multiple state records broken that night! Once again, I am so incredibly thankful to have been able to swim at that level, and I’ll cherish the memory of the state meet forever.”
