Gillett girls, boys cross-country teams qualify for sectionals
The Gillett Secondary School girls and boys cross-country teams each earned first-place finishes at the Division 3 Lena Subsectional on Tuesday to qualify for sectionals.
The girls posted a team score of 32, while the boys tallied a 42.
Suring's Olivia Noack and Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy co-op's Max Beyer also qualified for sectionals as individuals.
Derek Hanson won the boys race and led the Gillett boys. He completed the course in 17 minutes, 24.9 seconds.
Evan Peterson was third in 17:51.2, while Riley Engebretsen (18:43.5) and Ben Matczak (18:57.6) came in seventh and eighth, respectively. Wyatt Wilz (22:30.2) rounded out the team score by taking 24th, while Garrett Klein (24:16.6) and Grayson Klein (25:41.2) served as the team's No. 6 and 7 finishers.
The Gillett girls were led by the trio of Sylvia Hansen, Ryann Wagner and Carleigh Kaczmarek, who placed second, third and fourth, respectively. Hansen completed the course in 20:50.4, while Wagner posted a time of 21:17.9 and Kaczmarek a 21:26.8.
Megan Wagner (22:50.1) and Angela Mosconi (23:19.2) claimed ninth and 14th, respectively, to cap the team score. Laney DeBauch (24:24.8) and Alaina Herzog (24:24.9) filled out the team.
Noack completed the course in 21:49.5 to take sixth place. Beyer was 10th with a time of 19:07.6.
The Suring girls came in fourth as a team, while the Lena/STAA boys were fifth.
Chantelle VandenElzen (24:04.1), Hailey Thomson (24:09.3), Georgia Gerndt (24:11.6) and Samantha Seibert (26:21.1) were the other Suring runners.
Dylan Comins (19:57.2), Reed Hosking (20:07.4), Luke Misco (22:03.9) and Franky Umentum (28:50.9) ran for the Lena/STAA boys.
The girls co-op didn't qualify for a team score. Kennedy Marquardt (23:35.3), Megan Shallow (27:16.7) Ruth Alberts (30:26.4) and Samara VanArk (33:02.4) represented the co-op.
Gillett's teams, Noack, Beyer and the other sectional-qualifying individuals and teams are scheduled to compete in the Manitowoc Lutheran Sectional on Saturday.
