George Koons

George Koons, 95, of Shawano, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2020. George was born Dec. 6, 1924, in Monroe, Iowa, to the late Orville and Ethel (Ackley) Koons. He went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Navy during the World War II era.

George attended Purdue University for electrical engineering training while serving his country. He went on to further his education by attending Drake University, graduating with a major in sociology and his master’s degree in education. On July 11, 1945, George was united in marriage to Joyce C. Bird in San Francisco, California.

In 1964, George and Joyce moved to Shawano. Joyce preceded George in death on May 15, 2018, after 72 years of marriage.

George was director of elementary education for all of Shawano County for seven years and principal for Wittenberg public schools for eight years. George is a member of Church on the Hill in Shawano. He was a member of the Shawano Masonic Lodge 170, Wisconsin State Education Association, Elementary School Principal Association and Odd Fellows. His pastimes included playing golf and reading.

George was known as a great educator who affected thousands of young people, preparing them for life. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

George is survived by a niece, Doris Fettorolf, of Dixon, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 72 years, Joyce; daughters, Sheila C. Koons and Linda J. Porter; and brother, Clyde E. Koons.

A Masonic graveside service for George will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, 2020, at Woodlawn Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Shawano American Legion Post 117.
