Four injured in explosion, fire — UPDATE

CAROLINE — An explosion Monday in the town of Grant that injured four people appears to be related to propane gas, according to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department, though the investigation is now in the hands of the state Fire Marshal’s office.

One of those injured in the explosion was the the owner of the building, Steve Verg, 62, who resided there, according to the sheriff’s department.

The names of the other three have not been released.

The address is the location of V & S Builders, Tigerton.

Numerous fire department and emergency services personnel and medical helicopters were dispatched to N4011 Verg Road in the town of Grant just west of Caroline shortly before 4 p.m. for a report of an explosion and fire.

Agencies responding included Tigerton Police Department, Marion Police Department, Clintonville Ambulance, Tigerton Ambulance, Shawano Ambulance, and fire departments from Clintonville, Bowler, Town of Grant, Tigerton, Marion and Town of Pella.

Four helicopters were brought in to transport the injured parties; Spirit 1, Spirit 2, Theda Star and Eagle 3.

No further information was available Tuesday afternoon.
