Longtime Shawano County Board supervisor Deb Noffke has resigned her District 1 seat and has moved to the town of Hartland where she will run for the seat currently held by Peter Schmidt.

Noffke had represented District 1 — which includes Wards 1 and 2 of the city of Shawano — for nearly 18 years, according to the county clerk’s office.

Noffke has been a resident of the town of Hartland since Dec. 12. She filed a resignation letter on Dec. 23, leaving her District 1 seat vacant.

Daniel Poels has already registered to run for that seat in April.

According to the county clerk’s office, Noffke has met the 10-day residency requirement to run for office in her new district.

Noffke filed the necessary paperwork and signatures to qualify as a candidate in District 14 on Monday. The deadline to turn in nomination papers is Jan. 7.

District 14 includes the town of Hartland, Ward 1 of the town of Angelica and Ward 2 of the town of Washington.

Schmidt has filed notice that he will not be running for reelection in that district in the April election. There were no other candidates as of Monday.

Noffke said she will miss representing District 1, but her new location would not change her mindset about serving on the County Board if she is elected in District 14.

“When you’re a county rep, you’re an advocate for the little corner of the district you represent, but you’re really supposed to be representing all residents of the county,” Noffke said.

“I think the basic concerns for most people are pretty closely aligned. You realize you have to pay taxes and you have to spend money, but you want to get something for that dollar.”
