College Highlights (April 22)

Rockhurst University

Shawano Community High School graduate Averi Vomastic earned the Female Athlete of the Year award during the Rockhurst University Festival of Student Achievement Awards Ceremony on April 8.

Vomastic, a senior volleyball player, made the second team All-GLVC last fall. She led Rockhurst with 380 kills and 443½ points.

“It was really unexpected, but I give all the praise and thanks to my teammates and coaches for making this experience unforgettable and to my professors who were incredible, being flexible and helping me these last four years of college while playing volleyball year-round,” said Vomastic, of earning the honor.

UW-Stevens Point

Menominee Indian grad Guadalupe Corn competed in three events for the UW-Stevens Point women’s track and field team during the UW-Platteville Invitational on April 15.

Corn placed 26th in the hammer throw with a top toss of 35.59 meters. She placed 28th in the discus (31.29 meters) and 30th in the shot put (10.37 meters).

Winona State University

Wittenberg-Birnamwood graduate Maddy Pietz took part in the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 13-15 and the Beach Invitational on April 15 and 16 while representing the Winona State women’s track and field team.

At the Bryan Clay Invitational, Pietz was on the second-place finishing 4x400-meter relay team that posted a time of 3 minutes, 43.71 seconds. She was also on the sixth-place finishing 4x100 relay (46.73).

At the Beach Invitational, Pietz and the 4x400 relay team took second in 3:45.14, while the 4x100 team took ninth in 46.75 seconds. Individually, she placed 46th in the 200 (25.41).

University of Dubuque

Gillett grad Riley Engebretsen competed in the 1,500 run at the UW-Platteville Invitational on April 15.

Engebretsen placed 40th after posting a time of 4:53.67.

UW-Platteville

Pulaski graduate Kayla Lipsey took part in a pair of events for the UW-Platteville women’s track and field team at the UW-Platteville Invitational on April 15.

Lipsey made the 100 hurdles finals and claimed fifth in 16.83 seconds. She also took 25th in the high jump after clearing 1.31 meters.

UW-La Crosse

Oconto Falls grad Tucker Bouche pitched in one of the UW-La Crosse baseball team’s losses to UW-Whitewater last week.

Bouche was dealt the loss after working four inning in a 12-5 loss on April 16. He surrendered four runs on four hits and three walks.

UW-Madison

Shawano graduate Brandi Gueths competed in three varsity eight races for the UW-Madison women’s rowing team at the Big Ten Invitational on April 15 and 16.

The first varsity eight race came on the morning of April 15, with Wisconsin taking fourth in 6:51.079. Wisconsin also came in fourth in 6:41.832 in the afternoon session.

Gueths and the varsity eight team placed fourth in 6:27.068 during a race April 16.

UW-Eau Claire

Suring grad Mitch Stegeman competed in two individual events and on a relay team while representing the UW-Eau Claire men’s track and field team during the UW-Platteville Invitational on April 15.

The 4x400 relay team Stegeman was on placed fourth in 3:29.27.

Individually, Stegeman claimed seventh in the javelin throw (44.12 meters) and 10th in the long jump (6.54 meters).

UW-Stout

Pulaski graduate Kevin Ruechel won the shot put while competing for the UW-Stout men’s track and field team during the St. Thomas Tom Cat Invitational on April 13.

Ruechel’s top throw in the event was 16.74 meters, comfortably ahead of the second-best thrower (16.48 meters).

He also placed sixth in the discus (44.67 meters).

Western Technical College

Pulaski grad Chase Reinke played in three of the four baseball games the Western Technical College team played against Riverland Community College last week.

In a loss of April 15, Reinke collected three hits and scored once while playing left field. He pinch hit in the team’s win later that day.

Reinke was dealt a loss on April 16 after getting five outs. Only three of the eight runs he allowed were earned, and he struck out three batters.

College of Lake County

Menominee Indian graduate Jamison Besaw pitched a scoreless inning during the College of Lake County baseball team’s win over Harper College on April 10.

Besaw allowed one hit and struck out one batter.

Concordia University

Oconto Falls grad Katelyn Albrecht drew a walk for the Concordia softball team during its rout of Alverno on April 11.

As of April 17, Concordia held a record of 20-3 and is ranked No. 15 in the Division III National Fastpitch Coaches Association polls.

St. Norbert College

Oconto Falls graduate Mason Sefcik pitched the St. Norbert baseball team to a win over Lakeland University on April 16.

Sefcik got the win after pitching the first seven innings. He allowed two runs, only of of which was earned, on five hits and two walks while striking out four batters.

Oconto Falls graduate Emily Gonnering turned in three top-10 finishes while representing the St. Norbert women’s track and field at the St. Norbert Twilight on April 14.

Gonnering’s best finish came in the javelin throw, with her mark of 29.95 meters good enough for third place.

She placed 10th in both the hammer throw (26.03 meters) and discus (26.05 meters)
