Cemetery Walk portrayals announced

The Oconto County Historical Society is sponsoring its 12th annual Cemetery Walk “If Tombstones Could Talk” on Sept. 12-14.

The first two evenings will find the walk being staged outdoors at the Oconto Catholic Cemetery, 3024 N. River Road, Oconto. On the evening of Sept. 14, the program will be presented in the John B. LeMay Auditorium at Oconto Senior High School, 1717 Superior Ave., Oconto. All performances are at 6 p.m.

The individuals who will be portrayed this year and have their family stories told include Angelique Pecor, wife of Peter Pecor, early landowners of Frenchtown; Rose Sharp, early owner of local newspaper The Enquirer; Leola McKee, homemaker and longtime Oconto resident; Edward Herald, Oconto district attorney and judge; Gerald Beekman, U.S. Army colonel, retired, who established the Oconto Aviation Service; and William “Autsy” Stewart, respected Oconto resident, phone company employee and bailiff, who bravely served his country as a marine.

Tour-goers will be led in groups through the cemetery by lantern-carrying guides for the outdoor walks. Those attending the outdoor performances are urged to wear comfortable shoes, as the tour requires an amount of walking — sometimes on uneven ground. You may also wish to bring a flashlight and insect repellent. The indoor performances are designed for people who may find it difficult to walk in the cemetery, but it is open to everyone.

Tickets are $10 per person and will be sold at the Beyer Home and Carriage Museum through Sept. 2. If any tickets remain unsold after Sept. 2, they will be available for sale at Roberts Hometown Hardware, 919 Main St., Oconto. If any tickets remain unsold, they will be available for sale just prior to each evening’s performance.

Complimentary refreshments will be served to tour-goers at the cemetery on the evenings of Sept. 12-13, and in the cafeteria of the Oconto High School following the performance on Sept. 14. In the event of inclement weather, the performances will be moved indoors to the high school auditorium.
