Shawano’s boys wrestling team improved to 10-4 following its 42-31 win at New London on Jan. 11.

The dual started with the 150-pound match. Shawano lost that one but gained points back when Carsen Herm pinned Owen Ross. Shawano then earned a decision at 165 pounds when Drew Chelberg defeated Phoenix Fletcher 9-3.

Unfortunately, the Hawks found themselves in a 21-9 deficit after dropping matches at 175, 190 and 215.

“At 285, Kia Waukau came up with a big win 1-0,” coach Mike Homan said. “He earned an escape in the second period and had a tough ride during the third period to earn the win.”

Shawano received forfeits at 106 and 113 to bring the score to 24-21; however, after losing matches at 120 and 126, Shawano was behind again, 31-24.

“We had three weights left to go, and we knew we needed to wrestle well to earn a victory,” Homan said.

Owen Montour wasted no time in his match. He had a quick takedown and near fall to start the match. In the second period, he secured a pin in 2:19.

After that, Cody Popelka received a forfeit at 138 that allowed Shawano to take the lead 36-31.

Drake Herm was up last at 144. He wasted no time in getting a lead and ultimately scoring a fall in 39 seconds. That secured the dual win.

“We had many kids step up tonight and wrestle well,” Homan said. “Kia (Waukau) had a big match at heavyweight that stopped the momentum for New London and got it back in our favor. Carsen (Herm) and Drew (Chelberg) did what they needed to earn us some needed points.

“Owen (Montour) is a great young wrestler and has a bright future. Drake (Herm) just continues to be dominant and helps to rally the group around him.”

Shawano is 3-0 in conference duals.
