Athlete Profile: Kari Albrecht

Oconto Falls senior enjoying time on court with teammates

OCONTO FALLS — The Oconto Falls High School girls basketball team came into the new season hoping to develop depth, meaning the three seniors on the team would be counted upon for leadership. Kari Albrecht is one of those seniors.

Albrecht, who made the North Eastern Conference second team as a junior, is the team’s top scorer so far this season. She is a strong shooter from outside and also isn’t afraid to take on contact.

Albrecht also pulls down her fair share of rebounds while serving as a strong defender.

Albrecht, who made it to the state track meet as a hurdler this past spring, hopes to relish each moment on and off the court with her team, while also enjoying success along the way.

Q: When did your interest in basketball begin?

A: Ever since I was little, I’ve loved basketball, and it was my favorite sport. It all started in third grade when I got to play up on the fourth grade team and start my tournament ball. Since then, I’ve had a passion and love for the game.

Q: What is your favorite part about the basketball season?

A: My favorite part of basketball season is the bond you create with your teammates. With basketball being a very long season, you spend a lot of time with your teammates and you get very close to them. The basketball team is my second family, and I really cherish that and it is something very special that many individuals do not have.

Q: Do you have any individual goals you’d like to accomplish in your final season on the court?

A: My biggest goal going into this season is getting an all-conference award. For that to happen, I need many other smaller goals to accomplish that big goal. Every practice and game, I strive to be the best I can and play my game but also cheer my teammates on and have a lot of energy on the court and get my team fired up and having fun!

Q: You made it to state last year as a hurdler. How does being in track help you while on the basketball court?

A: I have always been in team sports, so it is nice to have an individual sport like track. It is so cool to go from that individual sport to the team sport because you notice so much more. I noticed just how much goes into the game of basketball, and how each person contributes in their own way individually to have good defense or create an open shot or lane.

Q: As the season continues on, what does the team need to continue to work on to be in the best position possible by the end of the season?

A: As a team we need to continue our communication; that is something we lack and always have. Communication is a key part in having a successful team and we really need to improve that to help each other out.

Q: What’s your favorite memory of competing on the Oconto Falls girls basketball team?

A: My favorite memory is all the fun practices we had. Although many were tough, many of us still found a way to make it fun.

Q: What are you going to miss most about high school basketball?

A: As many people probably say, the bus rides. I won’t remember the wins or losses but I will remember all the memories and talks we had on the bus. My teammates really make basketball so much better and I’m going to miss that a lot!

Q: Favorite TV shows, movies, and musical artists?

A: Mystery (TV shows and movies) and county (music).

Q: Name one thing about yourself that not many people know.

A: I hate horror movies.

Q: What’s the greatest piece of advice you have ever been told?

A: Do what is right, not what is easy.

Q: What are some things you hope to accomplish after graduating from high school?

A: Attend college to become a dietitian.
