Athlete Profile: Anthony Carroll

Gillett senior a reliable force on both ends of court

GILLETT — The Gillett High School boys basketball is led by a strong senior class. Anthony Carroll is one of those seniors.

After missing some time earlier in the season, Carroll has averaged more than 10 points per game and leads the team in rebounding.

Carroll is a threat from 3-point land, but he also isn’t afraid to drive into the lane and take on contact. He’s also a strong defender who makes it tough for opposing players to put up shots.

The senior has scored in double figures several times this season, with a 21-point performance against Oneida Nation on Jan. 10 being his highest-scoring game so far.

“Anthony is a hard working, high energy young man that gives all he has,” said Gillett coach Russ Long. “He’s the leading rebounder on the team, and we’re lucky to have him.”

Q: When did your interest in basketball begin?

A: Around sixth grade when Wyatt Herzog took me to my very first practice. Ever since then, I’ve been hooked on the sport.

Q: What is your favorite part about the basketball season?

A: I really love how no game is ever the same. And once that second round (second half of season when facing conference teams for a second time) comes, you never know what’s gonna happen in a game.

Q: Your team is senior-loaded. Just what has it been like to play with those other guys over the years?

A: It’s been great — they’ve all been there as long as I have; some even longer. We all have a great connection on the court and in school, as well.

Q: What’s your favorite memory of competing on the Gillett boys basketball team?

A: It’s hard to pick throughout the years, really can’t even pick one. We always have a great time at practice, the guys and I, and I am just glad I have an amazing team to create memories with.

Q: What does the game of basketball mean to you?

A: Just really getting out there and being on the same page with my teammates. Trying to play your heart out until that final buzzer sounds.

Q: Who is your favorite athlete, and why?

A: Russell Westbrook — I love his drive and athleticism and seeing how he would put his all on the court. It really inspired me to do the same.

Q: Favorite TV show, movie and musical artist?

A: TV show — “The 100” on Netflix. Favorite movie — “Spider Man: Homecoming.” Favorite musical artist — NF.

Q: Name one thing about yourself that not many people know.

A: I grew up taking care of my brother (Cody), who has Down syndrome. It’s really awesome to have him on the court for my senior year.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do when you are not in school or competing in a high school sport?

A: Spend time hanging out with my girlfriend (Chase Lemay) watching movies and watching races with her family.

Q: What’s the greatest piece of advice you have ever been told?

A: To keep shooting and not to talk myself down.

Q: What are some things you hope to accomplish after graduating from high school?

A: I’d like to graduate from college as a physical therapist assistant and live a successful life.
